WOW - such a unique and fantastic wagon :D .... in tooling already as well - what a great way to start off the Warley announcements....

This finally gives my Farish DRS mk2a escort coaches something prototypical to actually escort :locomotive: !!!

.... announcements like this really make N gauge such an attractive scale to model in - cannot wait to see what this model looks like ’in the flesh’....!

In addition to the flask wagon there is also a PFA in conjunction with Accurascale:

Revolution goes radioactive!

Revolution Trains is unveiling plans to offer two types of nuclear wagons in British N-gauge 1:148 scale at the Warley National Model Railway exhibition at the NEC this year.

First up is the giant KUA four-bogie 150t flask wagon designed to carry spent nuclear fuel from Royal Navy nuclear submarines from their bases at Devonport and Rosyth to Sellafield for disposal.

There are two of these behemoths in service – MODA 95770 and MODA 95771 – and they were built by Bombardier/Prorail of Wakefield and introduced in 1998.

Nowadays when loaded they are always accompanied by DRS courier coaches carrying elite protection teams – often Royal Marines or similarly trained Army units - and frequently double headed to allow for the failure of a locomotive.

The Royal Navy still has numerous retired but fully-fuelled nuclear submarines in southern England and Scotland and these wagons are expected to see ongoing use for years to come.

These models are not crowdfunded but will be available to order from Revolution shortly with a guide price of around £75.

Revolution’s Mike Hale said: “These wagons are sure to be an eye-catcher on any layout, and with complementary DRS locomotives and courier coaches already released by Dapol and Graham Farish, offer virtually a complete train in a box.”

To accompany the KUA wagons, Revolution is teaming up again with highly-regarded Irish manufacturer Accurascale to shrink their very popular PFA 4-wheel container flat down to N.

The PFAs were built by Standard Wagon Co. in 1986 for containerised coal traffic in distinctive Cawoods or British Fuels open containers but have also seen use on gypsum trains.

In the early 2000s several were acquired by DRS for use as runner wagons and to carry low-level nuclear waste – such as contaminated clothing, wiping rags, tools or medical disposables - from power stations and other nuclear facilities to Drigg, about 4 miles south of Sellafield, in Cumbria.

The models will be based on Accurascale’s 4mm version and incorporate a diecast deck section for weight.

Revolution is also proposing the distinctive half-height low level waste containers, and if there is adequate demand the open-topped coal containers and ribbed gypsum containers that characterised the services these wagons were used on.

Revolution’s Ben Ando added: “We want N gauge modellers to have the same opportunities to model interesting trains as their 00 counterparts and the synergy we have developed with our friends at Accurascale means that, with the ongoing support of our customers, we can help to make this happen.”

Waits for 4mm version to accompany a recently announced loco..................

;)

2nd that! I am going to source the Model Rail Exclusive Bachmann Mk2 DRS support coaches just in-case. Never bothered when originally released as nothing to run with them, yet now at £200 plus on eBay...I am going to have to be savvy! Likely ending up spending Christmas in the shed, painting some form of Mk2 dark blue!

I presume you mean that as the KR Models version is now not happening, RevolutioN might take it on. I wonder if there's been a conversation between the two?

You could always do the more recent Mk.2e escort coaches, these seem to have replaced the Mk.2a pair now.

DRS tell us that both the 2as and the 2es will continue in use; the 2es in particular are used on another train that requires escorting moving what appear to be refrigerated containers...

The Fridge.

Interestingly, the saloon windows appear to have been modified.

cheers

Hi Mel,

No, Revolution have had no contact wth KR Models.  The wagon they showed in CAD is a different type to the one we are proposing and not one used for the MoD submarine traffic, which is what we are interested in.

cheers

I notice that the Revolution press announcement states "Nowadays when loaded they are always accompanied by DRS courier coaches carrying elite protection teams – often Royal Marines or similarly trained Army units - and frequently double headed to allow for the failure of a locomotive."  However, the above photograph clearly shows a KUA without courier or escort coaches.  My question is therefore, are the escort coaches only required when the wagons are loaded or is the reference to "nowadays" after a specific date?  I'm just wondering how often these wagons are moved without the escort coaches.

With DRS, the rule of thumb is basically this....

Loaded (either x1 KUA or x2 KUA) = x2 locos and x2 escort coaches.

If you see any photos where there is NOT x2 locos plus x2 escort coaches, then the KUA(s) is/are, empty.

I think there are a lot of positional moves which get captured and thus gives the impression that the rule of thumb isn’t adhered to....

However, the nice part about all the positional moves, which can result in just about any permutation of KUA, loco(s), escort coaches and other wagons (eg. PFA), is that this offers free license to portray the KUA as you please....

..... and of course, with the KUA now announced, the loaded version of the train is entirely available too (thanks to the Farish mk2a BSO escort), which is nice also!

Hi Dungrange,

The KUA wagons are always escorted when loaded, if they are travelling as in the picture it will be for:

1) Positioning moves

2) To / From maintenance locations - this includes a test run post maintenance

3) Driver Training / certification

The KUA wagons when loaded have always travelled with Mk2 escort coaches, prior to the KUA and the Mk2 the MOD trains used Mk1 Escort coaches but not sure on the wagons. It has been the case for many years that any MOD nuclear traffic was escorted and had to have 2 locos for security

I notice a few comments about obtaining the NGS EWS inspection saloon.... is there any likelihood of Bachmann [ever] doing a re-run on that as a general release?.... by which I mean, would they be permitted to do so? They did release the Queen Mary guards van eventually, which I believe started life as an NGS special also.

oooh, guess what I just found in the closet....

.... no, it wasn’t R Kelly.... :sarcastic:

.... but it was a spare 374-681, ie. the first DRS mk2a courier coach that Farish produced in 2013.... looks like that’ll be going on a well known auction site in the near future :crazy_mini: !
