Neat way of getting yourself in  the photo.

Stand in front of the window when you take it. :)

Images of the new crossing signalling on the WSR website: http://cgibin.wsr.org.uk/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?h=Topical+pictures&t=pics

It's not a colour light signal then but it is a strange design, is that box at the bottom a colour light repeater?   The other pictures don't show it from the other side.

At a guess, it might be a Limit of Shunt indicator, if "somebody" doesn't  consider the signal itself to be sufficient .

Edit. The next pic in the sequence does show the other side, but isn't very informative. Looks like whatever is to go on the front may not yet have been fitted.

There are some mixed messages here. Last month they were proclaiming they were running at a profit and now they want more. It's all a bit confused.

As for the signal, is the low head a white light indicator for the crossing? These are usually at eye level but Minehead is exceptional.

They may be running in profit now but that is because the railway is running there is income from fares and shop sales, but soon the railway will shut for winter, apart from Santa specials.  Then the railway has little income but still a lot of expenditure and the loss of the 2020 season has left a hole.

Or possibly rigged temporarily for testing but awaiting fabrication of brackets for permanent fixing?

Final works to complete the new level crossing under way, physical works expected to end 21 October and then the testing, training and certification begins so no passenger trains to Minehead until the new season in Spring 2022.

http://www.wsr.org.uk/news.htm#2413

Although it will be past the end of the season any compliance and testing work is hardly a major imposition as the major part of the compliance stuff should have been completed before physical work started and all that is left is to check the work was done to spec - a lot of which should/would have been monitored as the job progressed.   There will be the need to trst but that should only be a few days fora qualified Tester unless any problems are encountered.  Then obviously continuity training of the Railway's technical staff and those operating staff involved in emergency operation and that is about it.

So hardly a massive amount to do once the crossing is fully commissioned and testing is complete.   BUT it is still past the end of the usual season so was anything different ever expected I wonder?

@The Stationmaster I think the locals may have been hoping the Christmas specials might have been able to use Minehead, think they used to work from both end of the line.

Given we are past the final gala of the season, I think everyone should just be pleased the saga is almost behind them and they can focus on next season being a good one - they seem to have done well this season given it's late start and truncated running.

It's the height of the post above the arm that looks odd to me about that signal.

If they were to raise the arm to the top of the post and put the drivers white light where the arm is currently is, that might look better.  But the white light won't be necessary if it's going to be a CCTV crossing which I understood to be the plan?

If that's the height the arm should be for optimum sighting, shouldn't they have sawn 18" off the top of the post before fitting the finial?  Or are we looking at an incomplete job, having removed the white light to the ground as stage work and already lowered the existing signal from a previously higher position?  Would that explain what appears to a loop of wire from the lamp ?  I thought this was a colour light before the work they've already done.

surely though....if the signal release is interlocked with the crossing (which given its protecting an A Road you would have thought they might have done this time?) a white light shouldn't be required?

My guess is that the post is (or was) intended to carry something else that's not (yet?) been fitted.

It certainly looks very odd the way it is.

John

Does that make WSR a forward thinking business.

Up to date pic of that signal.

Found on WSR website run by Steve Edge. Also has some more info

under News tab. Worth a look if you're interested.

Looks like the home straight now, but it's 4-5 months long!
