RMweb Premium uax6 Posted December 31, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 31, 2019 213, A lovely shot of a proper castle coming out of Inverness, none of your fake GW locos here! The train is typical of the time, a right mixed bag of carriages. Midland clerestory brake, a carriage I don't recognise, an LMS p2 brake vehicle and what could be a LMS standard P1 non-corridor. Either side there are HR road vans of differing types. 214, 14757 at Perth. This must be after 31st Jan 1931 when she overrall the stop blocks at Dundee West, as she has had her shortened HR chimney replaced with a Caley one. She was the first to be withdrawn at the end of 1936. 215, another HR River. She was withdrawn in October 1939. Andy G 2 1 1

Either side there are HR road vans of differing types. I've not been keeping up... The leading carriage isn't an ex-Midland clerestory, it's ex-Midland & Glasgow and South Western or ex-Midland & North British Joint Stock; a 50 ft corridor brake composite to D566, of 1899/1900. In pre-grouping days, the Midland Scotch services north of the Forth were worked via the Waverley Route, Edinburgh, and the Forth Bridge, courtesy of the North British. Did this routing survive the grouping? In which case this may be an ex-M&NB vehicle. (I think the M&NB joint stock arrangement continued until 1930, when the stock was divided between the LMS and LNER, with their own stock alternating on Waverley route expresses.) The third carriage is another of those de-lux LMS Period 2 60 ft corridor brake composites, D1704, built 1929/30. I think both the second and fourth carriages are late pre-Grouping 57 ft corridor carriages, the nearer one an 8-compartment third and the further one a 4 third + 3 first composite - neither has the distinctive angle-iron trussing of LMS standard underframes. The lack of footboards on the composite suggests to me that it might be ex-LNWR; the profile of the all-third looks different; could it be ex-Caledonian? (I'm not well up on Scottish carriages.) The LMSCA have done a superb job on restoration of the exterior (though for the moment they've baulked at fully-lined livery - with which many a modeller will sympathise). Alas it seems that as BR stripped out the original interior when the carriage was converted to departmental use, there's no prospect of being able to wallow in the spaciousness of a delux "Royal Scot" third! The choice of that vehicle to pose as a Russian carriage - and also Swedish, I think - was because of its large drop windows that actors could lean out of. ( I believe George Formby used such a facility in one of his films - probably not the same coach though ! ) The LMSCA would probably be a little foolish completing a fully lined finish before they re-position the doors that were moved in departmental days : some of the original compartment partitions were moved too, but they're long gone now !
RMweb Premium Compound2632 Posted January 2, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 2, 2020 (edited) 225). A pair of ex-Midland 48 ft square light clerestories of 1898-1902 - both lavatory composites to D508. The nearer one is the brake composite version and retains the glazed toplights to the doors; the rear one is the luggage composite version and has had the door toplights replaced by ventilators (per the Ratio kits) a modification started in late Midland days but evidently not universal by 1939. (The D508 composite was the most numerous and useful type of these 48 ft carriages but unfortunately not one of the three diagrams done by Ratio.) Lacy & Dow, Midland Railway Carriages, doesn't give withdrawal dates for these carriages but the similar non-lavatory carriages built in 1900-1902 for the Leeds & Bradford district local services were being withdrawn steadily throughout the late 30s with the last few hanging on until 1946 - possibly retained as a spare set. In the background, a couple of ex-LNWR full brakes, one arc-roofed, the other with elliptical roof and in the "toplight" style - much the same as the fourth and third vehicles in No. 227. Wickham Green
I spy two odd beasts and a Cauliflower .............. I guess you're referring to the LMS railcar : a closer relative to the BR first generation type than the oft-quoted - and far more numerous - GWR type. It was a one off and didn't have very long in traffic - ended up* as a departmental unit of some sort. * literally - the end cars only 1
