Empties can run without escort coaches (they are not for barriers but armed security).  They do some bits of maintenance at Sellafield IIRC what one of the guys at DRS said, but as you say it could have been just for training or testing.  You know that if there are no escort coaches that it is empty!

Loads don't go north to Georgemas (for Dounreay) but come south to Sellafield and the southbound train will have needed the escort coaches once loaded.

Thanks Mike, I’ve seen photos before of them going empty to various places, similar to FNAs which don’t (usually) run with one loco unless for repair/empty. It must’ve been a training run as we’ve both said.

I've never seen any KUAs in the flesh unfortunately...one model which is (will be) one of the small number of my fleet I’ve not seen in real life. Never say never though!

Jack.

You'll certainly need two Type 3s to shift them!

You can borrow mine too, and my barrier coaches.

It’ll almost complete a full lap of DL without moving ! :laugh:

cheers,

Phil.

So that’s 6 KUA flasks, 6 barriers, at least 6 type 3s between us all (maybe the odd type 5 and maybe even type 2 too!)...throw some PFAs and FNAs in as well for good measure???

Watch out on Sunday afternoon at the next show DL attends!! :senile:

I think you'll need the to get the escorts from real life to protect them

Is it absolutely certain that loads never go north to Dounreay any more.  At one time they certainly did since the RN had/have a testing facility there.

The Rolls Royce reactor test facility was at Dounreay but the last reactor was shut in 2015 and the next design of sub reactor hasn’t been confirmed (the MoD has also said computer modelling should be sufficient rather than test reactors). I’m not sure if either of the test reactors was ever refuelled or not.

Cheers Mike

Looking at photos of these, they seem to have been hauled by pretty much everything that DRS owns except the Class 68s. Is there a reason for that or (axle load or multi-working) or is it just I didn't find any photos?

If it is multi-working, then there seem to be plenty of photos of single locos hauling them at times, but still no 68s.

Cheers,

Roy

Class 68 / Class 88 combo certainly has happened on at least 1 occasion (not my video though).

Thanks both. These are not my normal era, but for some reason that I can’t quite undertand, I was drawn to order a pair. I have a DRS 68 which was likewise an out-of-era purchase, that I can now justify using. Also means I might have to buy another suitable loco :-)

As an aside, not sure why my Flickr search for DRS 68 KUA didn’t return a photo on my desktop, but does on my phone.

Well I will be using DRS 68s with them. Do they also use 37/4s occasionally (in approximate present tense)? I will end up with 5 68s (2 TPE, 2 DRS and 1 ScotRail which may get sold), and 2 AS 37/4 (023 and 025). I'd expect the 68s to be a better match?

And Accurascale are doing the matching 37/4...

And here's an oddball working.

Glasgow and South Western Growler

No Escort Coaches = no load in the KUA so it looks like a movement of empty stock. What are the wagons in the rear?

They look like JNA Falcons.

So was your 68 OK or does it have he incorrect printing on one side? I was tempted to go for either a Hattons' 66 or a 68, but with reports of so many problems I've decided to wait. I have an old Hornby DRS 47 (47501) which will do for me - it will go with my Hornby MK2f's the 3 PFA's (when I get replacements) and the KUA's.

Printing is fine, it came from the second batch.

I have had 5 68s in my possession, 1 had the livery defect which I knew about and have sold on. Everything else spot on with them. Hattons 66s a whole other kettle of fish. Had 9 across my doorstep to get 4 locos I am happy with (1 ok first time, 1 replaced the once, 2 replaced twice)

Quite - but 37/4s seem fairly uncommon on the KUAs

Yeah I can't see anything on Flickr that correlated directly with a 37/4 they are doing in the livery they are doing it.

In my case they may to on there, they are on order anyway and I also have the 68s anyway.

Nice little video for this thread, not my own but please give the person a like and/or subscribe...

The KUAs were being transferred south from Sellafield, ultimately destined for Devonport Dockyard this morning. I saw an escort coach move had run yesterday too, oddly just one - don't think this has occurred before?
