Empties can run without escort coaches (they are not for barriers but armed security).  They do some bits of maintenance at Sellafield IIRC what one of the guys at DRS said, but as you say it could have been just for training or testing.  You know that if there are no escort coaches that it is empty!

All very well for a vehicle maintenance run, but for a routine empty trip to collect a load even if the security staff travel one way by road, doesn't it mean they need an extra working just to get the support coach there for the loaded journey the other way?

Possibly yes. The trip today is an example. The KUAs travelled sans escort vehicles from Sellafield to Crewe Coal Sidings (DRS compound) yesterday as per @classy52's video, and the BSO escort coach was tripped from Kingmoor to Crewe by a class 88 via the WCML. If the coaches remained at Crewe then this wouldn’t have been necessary. The whole ensemble (as per my posted Flickr link) is currently on its way to Devonport, with KUAs and escort coach as you’ve suggested to pick up a load (presumably...).

So it really depends where the KUAs and any escort coaches are when a requirement for them comes in. If everything was at Crewe yesterday then we wouldn’t have seen the KUAs hauled on their own.

Jack.

Here's the moving image, great shot and again not my own video thus please give the person a like and/or subscribe...so many DRS loco's you could use now for the KUA's from various manufacturers so the world's your oyster.

Hi Fran,

What are the running numbers for both these wagons?...apologies if I've missed this in the thread and can't seem to find them listed on your website.

Cheers

Steve

Pictures on website appear to show MODA 95770 and 95771.

Ssshhhh, you have just upset all those people who ordered more than one set ;)

I heard they were going to build another matching pair as there's more work for these and start scrapping the FNAs off as the Magnox work has stopped now

If there's not enough work for FNAs then why did they buy more only a few years ago?

The new ones can I have been told can carry a few different types of containers while the older one are long in the tooth and can carry only Magnox flasks, as the last Magnox reactor was de fuelled about 12 months ago this does limit there use. The transport of low level waste will increase which has reflexed on the use of full height containers now instead of the half size ones. Just because DRS have bought new stock doesn’t mean they will use it efficiently, safety first, cost later.

Yes I suppose if it's nuclear waste spillage/crash vs new wagons then new wagons it would be!

Interesting (and practical) that the FNA-Ds can carry different things

As long as the outward shape of the flask fall into the wagons load space area there’s no real issue but the old flasks were built for Magnox fuel rods. At the end of the day the FNAs are tried and tested (in a big way lol) and put simply is just a wagon with a sliding lid.

Can't wait until Xmas !!

They look brilliant.

Had two 57's and two barrier coaches for a couple of years now, awaiting somebody, (me or someone else), to make the KUA.

Got a train at last !!
