Looking good and that’s in bits! That looks a lot of die cast, what’s the weight of each wagon likely to be?

Thanks

Ali

Hi Ali,

Cheers for that! We're not sure yet, we will know when we get the first sample sent to us shortly.

Looking excellent already. Any update on a possible delivery date?

Hi Barrington,

Delivery will be in mid-October, subject to approval of the tooling sample.

Cheers!

Hmm what do we have here?? Well, we do like a bit of heavy metal.... :) Look out for our first prototype sample of our KUA nuclear flask wagon in the coming days!

Cheers!

Fran

Did it arrive via Liverpool ?

(just it seems to be missing its wheels ?)

:-)

when you get this kit, do you get a parts diagram, or do you have to figure it out ?
cant wait to see the first assembled version ?

Hi Fran,

Just had the email with the update. The KUA is looking fantastic, all that piping detail above the bogies and the air tanks and the hood itself looks very sharp close up.

I had better get on with the new big layout so I can run them!

Hope you guys are all well,

thanks

Mark

Thanks to Fran and the team for letting me take a closer look at this.

What the video can't get the message over about is the weight, 420g - it's certainly got some heft to it. Please bear in mind this an EP sample, not a deco sample or a finished product and so there are a couple of issues to be looked at including the handrails and the safety tread plates on the chassis top surface. One of the buffers has had a bit of a whack on it's journey too.

£160 for a twin pack equating to £80 a wagon does not seem outrageous at all when you get to grips with it plus the quantity to be produced isn't likely to be huge anyway. Get 'em while you can.

Well, I think I will give in and order some, they look awesome. I have 2 DRS 68s, and 2 DRS mk2f brakes on order so I think this would equate to a near as dammit prototypical train?

Am I right in thinking there are only 2 of these wagons in existence?

Correct, this pair are the only examples.

Incredible! Really looking forward to seeing the final product and can’t weight (see what I did there :rofl_mini:) to feel how heavy they are. Love seeing progress pictures and regular updates. All the best guys.

Some pictures of the wagons in use can be seen in the new book "The Railways and Britain's Nuclear Industry" by David McAlone from Key Publishing.

The book also has some pictures of 37610  still with Channel Tunnel cast metal roundels (and 37609 with scars from the removals of the branding)  carrying grey EPS livery overlaid with phase one-style DRS vinyls…..

I can clearly see how proud you the Accurascale team are of this KUA model but also other models in your range which really brings a smile to my face.

I have all your PCA Castle Cement wagons, DRS PFA'a and 4 Class 37's & 1 Class 55 all with sound on pre-order which brings even a wider smile to my face in these troubling times, your enthusiasm is infectious even from where I'm sitting in front of a keyboard...keep it up!

Well, on the strength of the recent pictures and the way this thing looks, ive just placed an order with Rails. The beauty of that and the fact that there is a lot of expence not just in the rolling stock but the locos themselves, at this current time I need to take advantage of the buy now pay later that Rails offer.

A fantastic model guys and I need another two 37 DRS's to go with this lot and the PFA nuclear set.

I’m a regular visitor to this site as Totnes is local to me and somewhere in which I plan to model as soon as I finish constructing my layout room. There are some lovely pictures on there of these superb wagons which show a few different locos hauling them across a handful of years which may be of use to someone. I don’t run the site of have any connection with the site just a keen viewer that keeps me entertained and up to date with what’s happening in my area.

I wish Bachmann would do another run of those DRS Escort Coaches which I'm sure would sell-out again considering what Accurascale are bringing to market, rare has hen's teeth and go for stupid money on eBay when they do pop up.

The original run was a Model Rail commission, so not directly by Bachmann.

Are the Hornby mk2f brakes not near enough? That's what I'll use.

On another note, further to my post about using 68s with these, I am struggling to find any pics of 68s with these other than a single 68 and a single KUA being returned to Sellafield from Kingmoor. Is that because outings with these are rare and 68s haven't been on flasks that long or is it that for some reason they don't use 68s with the KUAs?

Wow! The model certainly looks 'hefty' enough and as AY says; if it weighs 410g it’ll feel hefty too. It’s such an odd prototype but full credit to Accurascale for tackling it! Mine were pre-ordered straight after the announcement at Warley and I look forward to receiving them. :senile:

I did mention this at Warley, but pouring over the early CAD photos on the flyers, I felt the securing lugs/eyes were a little bit overly-emphasised, and this detail on the first EP still doesn’t look bob on to me. Admittedly I thought the eye needed to be at a right angle, however it's actually angled as shown below. Below is a pic and link to a photo of one of the mammoths under heavy overhaul at Arlington Eastleigh Works (from Carl Watson's superb site...link underneath to the photo), showing the yellow lashing eye to the lower centre:

And the photo from the Accurascale blog post as linked by Fran previously:

image.jpeg.01e8c9eff563666c2d33cfa8134ed4c2.jpeg

The hook/eye appears to protrude too far and be angled too shallowly, whilst the hole in the ring I think should be straight through at a right angle to the eye face. The shape may be because of the clearance needed for the bogie, but maybe if it were to protrude a little more from the chassis and be angled more, this would both look "right" (to me at least) and function correctly. A tiny detail on an otherwise exceptional looking model!

I haven’t seen any other pics of 68s on these...plenty of them on the KXA-C carriers though. I assume DRS use any traction to take them to/from repair/overhaul such as double 66s to take them to Eastleigh, but the last I heard was that DRS would only use 68s or 88s on n*clear traffic (with 66s the exception on traffic to Georgemas Jn due to RA or gauging issues), so again I’d assume from now on any use of KUAs would be with 68s or 88s. This is purely guesswork from a rail enthusiast - I’ve no 'insider' industry knowledge.

Regarding escort coaches there are now 2 pairs...the original MK2a BSOs (9419 & 9428) as released as a MR ltd. ed. and now a pair of MK2f BSOs (9506 & 9508) - a Flickr search will yield photos such as below:

9508 at Carlisle Kingmoor DRS Open Day 2019

The latter have had gangways removed as per the originals and also feature some opening windows at the top of the body-side windows, so these may be tricky to replicate. Interestingly I spoke to a member of staff at DRS' 2019 open day and he confirmed both pairs would be used going forward and that the aircons were not a replacement for the elderly original pair. I don’t think I’ve seen the new pair with KUAs or KXA-Cs; they’re mainly used with 'Megafret' intermodal wagons and trips locally on the Cumbrian Coast between Sellafield and Barrow Dockyard. But modeller's license in this respect would suffice to put them on a (pair of) KUA(s). ;)

Thanks.

Jack.

Flickr is your friend.

The "new" pair have been to Georgemas Jn (for Dounreay). Note the extra vents on the roof of the rear Mk2)

Ooh look - a KUA!

66305 and 66304 with 6M98.

OK so some differences then. I think FWIW I'll be happy enough with the mk2F BSOs as I have these on order anyway with some SOs to make a DRS passenger rake. Either to mix in with ScotRails to make 2 Fife Circle rakes (as DRS coaches and locos end up on these) and also to pull with 37419 and/or 37425 depending on which one(s) I order. So they would be multi-purpose with inaccuracies on the KUA rake.

Basically I love the wagons and given what I have around me (or will have) I can make a reasonably accurate plausible train.
