Hornby have recently introduced an A2/2 and A2/3 with no option other than flange less trailing wheels. I think the game is called follow the leader. I think you’re probably right. Opinions on how to do the trailing truck of pacifics is deeply divided. However, there is an optimal compromise and at the moment neither Hornby nor Bachmann is near it. In fact, things seem to have gone backwards; Hornby did better some years ago. But I will have difficulty resisting the new versions. Just for the sake of comparison, you understand... The new versions will have better chimney, dome and presumably scale diameter wheels, and various details finer , but the old one is still nice. Even if most are split-chassis. I look forward to arrival in shops! November... arrgghh I can think of several aspects which could garner some criticism, but overall it looks truly excellent. For me the thick front frame extensions are just like the old model, but there are no frame/running board issues in example above. and the general effect is stunning. I wonder what the timeframe is for variations, as in steam pipes, double chimneys and so? I got a replacement set of valvegear for my Kolhapur Jubilee, and this came with a Hornby-style bolt, which replaced the screw I had in the valvegear I removed. Glance higher up the page and you’ll see that flanged wheels will be supplied. The loco-tender connection looks to be the same as that used for MUs, with a clip which needs the supplied tool to separate.
