One of my biggest bugbears is manufacturers who churn out obscure diesel prototypes that only ran for about ten minutes and neglect the commonplace designs like 170s.  These are essential for a modern layout almost anywhere. I hope the wait is not too much longer. At least we now have a new batch of 170s in N gauge... although in N gauge we lack 158s...

One I thought would probably do well without a lot of effort is a XC 220/221 with DCC. Not retooled just new circuit boards and LED lights.

Having said that it would probably be at least £300 making it not good enough feature wise for that amount of money.

I dunno - I was happy to pay big ticket for a sound 158 because it was a great product. There is also the new white livery 221 variation that may tempt some....?

Yeah it was more that it may be low hanging fruit if it was just a few circuit boards, but would people pay £300+ for a DMU without internal lighting nowadays? And it would require 3 decoders which also wouldn't go down well with some.

Putting 1 decoder and internal lighting would mean a chassis (on 1 middle car) and coupler redesign, making it less of an easy win on Bachmann's part and probably putting it towards Pullman cost.

OTOH Hornby can do a better 5 car MU in the 800 than the 221 for well under £400 with low chassis and saloon lighting so maybe not.

If it was a dmu that I wanted for my layout/collection, I would buy it. But I tell you now, after testing, 1st thing I do is rip out all the pcbs, and dcc wiring and lights, going back to simple pickups wired direct to motor (along with extra ones if I feel it necessary).

Following your logic here, why do we not have several Electrostar models on the market already?

I have wanted a 220 and a 221, with good lighting and provision for a speaker since before XC days. With the lights in the end cars and the motor in the centre car, it can’t have been an easy job, or Bachmann would have done it by now. Present expectation would be up to 117/159* standard, so a new and expensive tooling would be required.

*With the lighting problem sorted out, of course.

I had a DC one I converted to DCC including at the ends but ended up selling it which I kinda regret. If it was a minter I'd probably still have it. But as you say the expectation, especially at the price Bachmann would likely try and sell it at, would be 158 etc. standard which would be a whole load more work.

In their day, they were lovely models but just from the end of the DC only era. They would have set Hornby’s Pendolino off beautifully. Hornby’s Pendolino is a less sophisticated model, along the lines of the Javelin, but I have to hand it to Hornby; Hornby models were very quickly adapted to DCC when DCC became a thing. It’s shame Hornby has allowed itself to fall behind Bachmann, although Bachmann adapted much more slowly.

Given their not entirely undeserved reputation for geological lead times, Bachman might have announced but if they had, there’s no chance they’d have done it...

My main bugbear with Hornby at the moment is 8 pin decoders, and their insistence on using common negative on lighting making mods more difficult. Model wise I have no complaints on my 60, 67 and 800. The HST is a bit long in the tooth but in general I think they are good. And in the case of the 800 I think it's good value too.

and in the case of the Class 87 its a very recent tooling with poor lighting options and limited decoder/speaker space inside. Not good enough for new tooling

I see even Heljan are moving on to 21 pin with the new class 86.

Reference the 170 .  It remains to be seen just how far Bachmann are on with this . My feeling is probably not very . Someone like Accurascale could come in and pinch it from under their nose . Bachmann are just too slow and on the high end when it comes to price . Accurascale or Cavalex could compete . It’s not like the 91 where Hornby would compete on price with Cavalex . With Bachmann I would have thought Accurascale and  Cavalex have every possibility of being less expensive.

And as it is announced as a competing product, Bachmann suddenly prioritise theirs to beat it to market?

I would have thought the likes of accurascale would go for the obvious locos over units initially . Those crying out for some decent competition - I’m talking 31/50/56 here.

Given cavalax are now doing the mgr wagons to a high degree, 56 possible. The 31 is good just lacks liveries and looks a bit crude in some areas

That’s quite out of character for Bachmann. Not like people wanted seal beam 45s for a decade then as soon as Heljan say they are doing one...

Except you’d think in that case Bachmann would ensure its version appeared first, but...

True , but it’s an old design .

at least they stopped the rotating fan but still got the 8 pin socket , silly screws under bogies and apparently unconvincing side windows .

I think I’ll be dead before Hornby do all the liveries (I’m 48)

I think it’d be a steal for another company

But there’s the dead hand of Kader . Have you ever known Bachmann to rush something into production , and as I’ve said likelihood is that Cavalex/Accurascale less expensive (different route to market gives them advantage) . Stepping stone to an electrostar
