RMweb Gold Popular Post Darius43 Posted December 3, 2019 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted December 3, 2019 (edited) Inspired by Gibbo’s posts on this subject I am modifying some old Hornby Freightliner flats using plasticard, plastruct angle sections and other bits and bobs. I know the handbrake wheels are at the wrong end on the FGA - may get round to correcting that later. Eight more to go... The old models scrub up quite well for a bit of effort although it gets a bit tedious when you have a lot to do, I did fifteen altogether, six FGA (outers) and nine FFA (inners). The container boxes aren't all that bad once you get a bit of paint and varnish on them to rid them of the plastic look that they have. I see you have applied some transfers for even more of an improvement. Gibbo. 3
jessy1692
Nice work! Have you used the pack of transfers from Fox for the containers and flats? I have some Railtech ones for the containers but u dont think they have the red triangles like Fox provide. Cheeers James

Cheeers James Hi James, I used Railtec transfers for the flats and containers. The red triangles are cut out from a slab of red decal paper left over from my aircraft modelling days. Gibbo kindly did me a set of plans after he made his. I have my own 5 set on the make after being inspired by Gibbo to have a go, however, i also got an S Kits detailing kit to go along with it.
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted December 7, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 7, 2019 (edited) Third flat wagon on the bench. Bogies removed by prying off the soft brass rivet using a small flat screwdriver. Plastic coupling blocks removed. Brass bearings added and plastic wheels replaced by 10.5mm diameter metal wheels. Container mounting pips removed and bogie mounting bosses slimmed down. Solid central chassis truss web elements removed. Razor saw cuts each side of the transverse webs followed by scoring with a knife and snapping off with pliers. New “slimmer” web elements added using plasticard strips. Chassis edge “deepening” strips glued on and trimmed to fit. Cheers Darius Edited December 7, 2019 by Darius43 12
RMweb Gold Popular Post Darius43 Posted December 8, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted December 8, 2019 (edited) Container mounting points fabricated from plastruct angle section and strips of plasticard. Once glued in place the plasticard strip gusset plates are trimmed to length. Brackets glued to side of chassis along with brake wheel brackets and chassis end plates. Air tank made from plastic tube with plasticard ends and tape straps. Cheers Darius Edited December 8, 2019 by Darius43 9

Cheers Hi Phil yeah they are Hornby ones, not quite as common as the boxes or tanks, they come with all the side boards in but they are easy to chop and change them to more prototypical styles Cheers James

Cheers Darius Hi Darius, Interesting that you seem to working upon a wagon at a time, I did mine in batches by working through each operation, five wagons at a time, and then going on to the next operation. I see you have fitted your FFA's with Kaydee buckeyes rater than the fixed bars as the originals. I used fixed bars, but then I'm far too tight to buy Kadee couplings, In fact I'm so tight that I fitted three link coupling and not screw link to the FGA's !!! What wheel are you using ? Gibbo. Some 27' ones ended up, loaded two per ex-Boplate, carring wrapped coil to and from Newport Docks.

Cheers Hi Phil - yes its an original Hornby with some of the side panels cut out , a spot of red and yellow paint and some weathering. It (and the other containers) are glued down to the flats with pva so future removal should not be an issue. I added a Bachmann scenecraft tarpaulin load. Hi Gibbo, I am using some "unknown" 10.5mm diameter insulated metal wheels that I spotted on e-bay a year or so ago. The flanges are large by modern standards but are still OK for code 75 track. I have enough for four flats so have recently acquired a bulk pack of Liliput 10.5mm diameter wheels from e-bay to cater for the rest of them. I considered a fixed coupling for the rake of five but decided to use Kadees as they are "kinder" with respect to operation on the layout. muddy water
Great! Any chance of giving the dimensions of the microstrip section you used the detail the wagons? It will make shopping a lot easier. Thanks!
RMweb Gold Barry Ten Posted December 11, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 11, 2019 Me too: In mine I also added brass strip under the sides of the wagons, to reduce the tendency of some of them to sag in the middle. You can just see the strip under the middle wagon in the above pic. I had a lot of scrap plastic card and sections so I just rummaged around in the box for whatever was suitable. 3

RMweb Gold Barry Ten Posted December 11, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 11, 2019 I didn't pick up on the chassis sides needing to be a bit deeper. I think mine will stay as they are as it was such a faff getting the container mounts lined up consistently.
