Hornby Freightliner Flats

I painted up some of the Triang 30' flat sided boxes in Freightliner livery although I'm not actually sure that such a style of box was built, I also converted three Triang 20' riveted boxes into two 30' riveted boxes.

These 30' boxes may well be spurious although there were 20' versions in this livery. Freightliner 30' boxes were either categorised type M and type R, I'm not exactly sue what they look like though. Does Bernard Know ?

I will check through the information I have. I suspect the 30 foot boxes will be ISO only. They were still ribbed in the same kind of way but had corner framing and twistlocks so they were stackable. Incidentally, the middle letter on the numbers is the container type, A, B, C, etc.

Hi Bernard,

The trouble with the numbers on the boxes is that they are what are supplied with the Railtec transfer sheet, I know that they are incorrect for certain types of box but having a number looks better than not. Most of the numbers start 14L** although there ares some 13S** and 14T** numbers.

It's all good fun and they look just fine, possibly better or possibly worse when not wearing my spectacles !

When the transfer sheet was created, a selection of numbers were used which were logical / best guess in the absence of any holistic and readily available information at the time. I try to have both breadth and depth of knowledge of railway insignia from the 1890s to the present day (imagine that), but I am just one modeller who started making his own transfers and gradually started making them available to others - and inevitably there will be gaps. If the number sequences on that sheet aren't 100% accurate then I'm certainly open to modifying them in future print iterations if there is need.

Certainly enjoying seeing some of the finished articles on this thread.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your reply I shall send you a PM with some number series that may be both more accurate and useful.

For my part I'm not overly bothered about numbers of individual wagons or container boxes, your transfers look the part and that is good enough for me !

Cheers for your good work,

Gibbo.

OK, here are the early Liner train/Freightliner container types:

A  10 foot box

B  20 foot box

C  27 foot box

D  30 foot box

F  30 foot box, full side doors

G  10 foot box ISO

H  20 foot open

J   27 foot open

K  30 foot open

L  20 foot box ISO

M 30 foot curtain sides

N  30 foot ISO

P  20 foot insulated

R  30 foot insulated (rebuilt from N above)

S  20 foot box, side doors

Different manufacturers an BR works were involved so not all containers in each group would necessarily look exactly alike. The standard Triang Hornby container is the B, the open the H. Private Owner containers would not be listed above. Additonally there were various one-off experimental containers and some of the alloy Speedfreight containers were modified to be compatible with the Liner wagons as were the bigger Speedfreight CAs.

Next stage is to change the “L”s to “D”s with some black enamel and a cocktail stick.  A job for tomorrow.

Ms were curtain sided, introduced before the Tautliners which are familiar now. I've a series of photos https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/brfreightlinercontainer/e228c79b8

They regularly delivered Schweppes product to the warehouse I worked in as a student.

Tautliner's USP was that the sides were load-bearing, unlike their predecessors, where the load had to be strapped down. There were some grounded 'Exide' curtain-sided boxes at Pengam depot, until it shut.

Hi Paul,

I got the M type from Freightliner Life and Times where the type must suffix must be a miss-print for the numbers are listed as "N".

Load for next flat completed.  I used home printed decals inspired by James (jessy1692) in his posts on Gibbo’s “blue striped Freightliner” thread.

Note the lower two the British Rail is brighter white, this is because i applied the transfer onto rail grey rather than blue on the first one.

Nice work Darius, youll have yours finished before me at this rate!

James

Hi Gibbo,

Just to give you a push in the right direction with the Cartic4, I could be interested in taking the finished article off your hands?

Keep me posted via PM?

Cheers

You guys are really doing great stuff with the Hornby flats and containers.

For a while I've been thinking about buying a rake of the Bachmann ones, but keep putting it off for cost reasons.

But now I think I'll dig out my 10 old Hornby ones - all I did to them in the past was to fit 10.5mm metal wheels - you have given me a lot of inspiration!
