Thanks Steve S Hi Steve, (1) I chopped off the chunky Hornby coupling brackets two years ago hence the new brackets. On the flats I modified today I looked at retaining the Hornby bracket but it was too chunky and at the wrong level for the couplings I wanted to use. I would recommend you check your coupling with the Hornby bogie/bracket to see if it works for you. (2). I didn’t have an S-Kits set for the first five flats that I modified so I scratch built the buffer beam installation based on photos on HMRS Paul Bartlett’s website and used spares box buffers. Takes me back to the late 60s/early 70s when I had five of these wagons, two in the original black and three blue ones. Inspired by views of the short-lived Par - Park Royal Freightliner service alongside Par station I fitted the black ones with bufferbeams, tail lamp boxes and buffers all made from the one sheet of (20thou) plasticard I had at the time, with bits of sprue for the shanks. My favourite was the one with open containers, I really liked those mouldings. However I was a bit put off by the wagons' tendency to adopt a curve along their length - from memory the older black ones were straighter than the later blue ones. It appears that your large amount of work sorts this! I was very silly in not taking any photos of the Par Freightliner when I had the chance - I did photograph 1589 in the short headshunt and 1640 from the footbridge where one end of a wagon just comes into view on the left. I recall that loading was accomplished by a red Sparrows Hire tracked crane, but that's it. One vivid memory though is seeing 1636 hammering through Exeter St David's with the up working in the dark on 2/1/69 and noting open containers loaded with giant lumps of granite - no tarpaulins or straps necessary! 2 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Halvarras Posted April 13, 2021 Share Posted April 13, 2021 For anyone inspired by this thread to 'have a go' from scratch, Zetland Model Railways currently have 26 different Hornby container wagons for sale, containers in a variety of liveries (not original BR Freightliner alas), and they all look 'straight'. Also some loose containers including a tidy-looking triple pack of 'tanktainers'. Prices seem reasonable to me, but 'Bay trawlers may disagree of course! Cheers James Hi James, Airbrushing is definitely the way to go with wagons like these. Brush painting would have taken a lot longer. I am a relative newcomer to airbrushing having used a brush for most of my previous aircraft modelling. Brush painting the camouflage on a 1:48 scale Avro Vulcan is not for the faint-hearted. I have amassed a fair collection of Hornby containers and have a few of the 30’ container “kits” that Peter’s Spares was selling a year or so ago. Cheers Darius I think ill have to invest in an air brush at somepoint, as much as I like brushing and rattle cans air brushing is the way to go. That's a very healthy stack of containers there too, you must have been keeping an eye out for good ones with intact doors too, normally the doors have vanished on the ones I get! The ones with mssing doors are "buried" in the stack away from view. I plan to convert them into 30' Freightliner containers.
