Latest conversion subject has arrived - plan is to modify the open containers to 30’ versions in addition to improving the flat wagon.

The label on the box made me smile.  Brings back happy memories...

Made a start on the 30’ open containers.  A bit of work with a razor saw, a Stanley knife and some plasticard strips and Bob’s your Uncle.

Not worried about the gaps in the floors as both containers will have a full load when on the flat.

Cheers

30' opens were used for traffic from ASW (now CELSA) in Cardiff docks. As the curves around the works were too sharp for Freightliner wagons, a small  fleet of long-wheelbase Tube wagons were used to shuttle the containers from the steelworks to Pengam Freightliner depot. The wagons had sides and ends removed, and some strategically-placed bits of angle-iron to keep the container in situ.

Hi Darius,

Was only one end painted red with the other end grey ?

I ask as I have some 20' opens that I am about to paint and I don't actually know.

Gibbo.

Hi Gibbo,

The red red painted end came with the model so was done by Hornby.  I don’t know if it is correct but I left it as is. Perhaps it signifies an openable (or non openable) end panel.

I added random red painted panels to the sides.

Cheers

Hi Darius,

The trouble is that most photographs shew battered ad weathered looking flats on trains between boxes so that you can't make out the ends clearly, added to which the photographs are black and white. I could do with a photograph of one ex works so that I know what they were supposed to look like to start with.

A quick look through my stash of old Freightliner leaflets came up with this:

FLopen.jpg.38c361d98a2185bdada3bb328c2bd307.jpg

So, the Mk.1 would seem to have red and grey sides, the Mk.2 (as per Triang-Hornby) grey; the sides are not in place, but uprights are grey along the sides. Diagonal planks on the floor are correct too (though not the location holes ;) ).

Cheers Bernard,

You know your stuff !

Interesting that the fork lift truck has a crush cage at the top of the mast rather than around the driving position.

With paint hardly dry:

Yes. Also note no under-rider bars on the lorry trailer, normal at the time.

Excellent stuff from BernardTPM - I sense some extra red paint is heading towards my 30’ opens...

I used 3D printed beer kegs that I found for sale on eBay.  I know the load should palletised but this was the best way that the kegs would fit.

In any event it’s only keg beer...

Hi Darius,

I painted up some of the Triang 30' flat sided boxes in Freightliner livery although I'm not actually sure that such a style of box was built, I also converted four Triang 20' riveted boxes into two 30' riveted boxes and two 10' boxes.

DSCF0926.JPG.7ca764036856d82cc04c5b467dceddb1.JPG

The box on the right is of a 30' type D.

These 30' boxes may well be spurious although there were 20' versions in this livery. Freightliner 30' boxes were either categorised type M and type R, I'm not exactly sue what they look like though. Does Bernard Know ?

Hi Darius,

What fun I had lining the ribs up on my ones !!!!

I used the latest variant of the moulding as it doesn't have the plain raised moulding strip or any rivets to make filing and sanding extra tricky.

Hi Darius,

Are you aware of this thread involving Hornby boxes in early liveries ?

Gibbo.

Hi Gibbo,

I have read and enjoyed your Freightliner threads many times - they were the inspiration for my having a go at my own.

Cheers
