Bachmann 2020 Range

A D&E modeller I know, who’s preferred era is 70’s & 80’s BR blue,  refers to the early 70’s as post-modern image.

“Post privatisation” is a term I’ve started to dislike and think is inevitably going to be meaningless. You could argue it already is, as we’re in what effectively is the 3rd era since the demise of BR.

As the BR nationalisation period recedes into distant history, it’s going to be increasingly seen as Just a phase in the long history of the railways in Britain.

Maybe, Post Nationalisation would have been a more apt generic term, to describe the ending of the BR period, leaving the more recent past since then, to be labelled more appropriately.

'Modern Image' was fine when Cyril Freezer coined it; it had a clear and easily understood meaning, modelling the then current scene of Corporate Livery Rail Blue.  This era lasted from 1966 to 1977 when Stratford MPD (we didn't call them TMDs in those days) began to paint it's 47s in non-standard liveries to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee.  This holed Freezer's description below the waterline; if you use a term such as 'modern' to describe modelling the current scene, because the current scene follows the timeline it is a moveable feast.  I'd say that 'current scene' is a better description of what I understand the term 'modern image' to mean, and that previous periods need their own labels, 'BR Corporate', 'Large Logo', 'Sectorisation', 'Early Privatised' and such.  This covers most issues, though doing it in decades works almost as well; everybody would understand what was meant if someone said they were modelling 80s practice for instance.

 

But if we use the term 'modern image' for layouts based on current practice, the timeline eventually scuppers us, unless we update our layouts with current practice stock and withdraw older stuff in line with prototype practice.  In this way, you could build and stock a layout as 'current practice' and then, in a few years make a decision to retain that period, calling it 'early 20s' or something, or update the stock and such buildings and scenic matters that might need attending to and continue to call it 'current practice'.

 

But I'm under no delusion that my feeble ramblings and rantings will have any effect.  Modelling terms sometimes persist, such as 'fiddle yard', or the incorrect 'frog' of our turnouts, which we call 'pointwork', and others fall out of use and become meaningless, such as 'crane shunt'.  Some of us old codgers will probably persist in using 'modern image' for layouts set half a century ago; I won't, but nobody ever takes any notice of me world'd be a better place if they did mumble grumble

But a lot of today’s modellers refer to the multi coloured swap shop shower of unit cack that infests today’s railways as “ modern image “,

 

better off with “ contemporary “ I reckon , as half of them were born long after “ modern image “ was first used

That is how I am trying to run my collection although it's not a very old collection. Only thing I have at the moment to be possibly withdrawn soon is a Northern 153, and 37025 and 37099 which I don't think will be withdrawn as there isn't much to replace 37s with at the moment!

 

As I only started buying stuff last year I have tended to buy stuff (unless at a good price) that I think has longevity on the network.

My under construction "Wednesford" layout covers the span 1966-2005 invoking an occasional use of Rule 1, so that's steam alongside green diesels and early AC electrics with yellow bibs, to Pendolini, Voyagers, Turborats and EWS Sheds and Dysons.  Modern image?  Modernist image?  Images of modernity? Elizabethan modern image? Semi-contemporary and recent modern image?

Or a model railway?

Labels are meaningless really.

labelling isn't the issue, its the confusion “1 label for all” creates...

“modern image” covers 1957-2020.. 63 years and counting...

 

steam has pregrouping, grouping, war time, post war, 1950’s and 1960’s.. and woe betide those who confuse 1948-1952 with 1950’s!! - That lion, even which way the lion is looking is highly monitored.

 

Whilst people decry multiple units dont sell... somehow manufacturers have managed to roll out “modern image”...

DLW/101/105/108/110/117/121/122/126/142/143/144/150/153/155/156/158/159/165/205/401/402/404/410/416/423/Blue Pullman/Brighton Belle/MLV/DPU + whatever i missed.

 

yet multiple units don't sell ?:wacko:

 

Post BR we have seen massive amounts of new classes of non-locos.. 139/170/175/180/185/220/1/222/230/331/332/333/334/345/350/357/360/375/376/374/377/378/379/380/385/387/390/395/397/444/450/458/700/710/717/720/800-803

 

of this lot the only thing tooled is 170/220/2/350/390/395/450/800-803.

but theres nothing modern to model ?:blink:

 

Theres plenty to pick from, and since 1994 liveries have changed on average every 5-7 years, and have another 2 decades to go.

Exactly. Loads of stuff to go at but they seem to ignore multiple units.

 

Also in your summary you say 220/2 which I presume you mean 220/1 as the 221 is tooled and the 222 isn't (in OO at least)?

Looking at second hand listings from the big retailers, there is a dearth of modern diesel/electric sets coming up for resale, probably because there's not too many available new.   There are some older diesels around but the large majority are steam locos.

Just been looking through my Combined Volume which arrived last week. I don’t mind having all the brands in the one volume; it’s quite useful in some ways to cover all things OO. My main misgiving is that, without the letter from David Haarhaus that goes to Club members, there is nothing that I can see to indicate which models are already available and which not. So casual buyers may go to their model shop of choice and expect anything in the catalogue to be available. A sort of “to come” moniker would be useful, though I appreciate that would go against Bachmann’s new philosophy. Otherwise I like it, including the retro look along with the title.

 

I’ve only looked at diesel and electric locos but immediately noticed two loco are missing, 32-027C D8035 in BR Green no yellow panel and 32-046 Class 20 20201 in BR Blue with dominoes and ED westie. Have they been dropped or just omitted?

Perhaps the Class 20's have been omitted because they have already got enough orders from retailers that cover the production run of them a similar thing happened with the Colas 70 that disappeared from the catalogue but wasn't released/produced when the catalogue came out.

Hi Samuel

 

And off the back of your comment, how hard are those Colas Rail Class 70's to get hold off, you never seem to come across them now and everyone seems to have sold out on them, they are like 'Hens Teeth' now to get hold off, without paying way over the odds for one.  Lets hope Bachmann re-release one with a different running number hey!

The usual interpretation of a previously proposed version of a model not appearing in the catalogue, is that insufficient retailer orders were received to qualify for a production run, so will not be available during the period the catalogue covers. ('Pull' system.)

I was looking for the Scotrail ones without success but they’re there now as are the other coaches you mention.
