Cambrian Shed- Steam MPD Microlayout

Recommended Posts

Hi All

With a me recently getting a new job, I have some spare change rattling around in my pocket, I have decided to get back into railway modelling again properly. I'm a bit limited on space so the appeal of a micro layout seems logical to say the least.

After toying with multiple ideas I eventually decided to model a small steam shed as this meant I could run/display quite a few of my locos at once. The concept is quite simple. 2 shed roads and a road for coaling/watering/other stuff to add a bit of operational interest.

Current progress, the Scale Model Scenery baseboards are on order but in the meantime I have started work on the shed. It is the Scalescene Gable shed but with a few adaptations and additions including a small workshop as well as "blocking up" one end of the shed as the kit is designed as a through shed (in reality the blocking is simply replacing the pre-designed sheets with brick paper)

I like the idea of the "other stuff" sidings because you can! It's the kinda scheme I'd talk myself out of for no good reason at all. Probably why you're further than me and I've been meaning to make a start for ages!

Do you intent on having a sequence / shunting games / rules? Or just play / shunt as you fancy? I seem compelled by the idea of having a plan and a inglenook style forced shunting to do but why I don't know!

Good luck with the project...

No real plan for shunting.  Just run locos round a bit say "Into the shed>disposal>wait a bit>out again>coal/water>off shed and bringing in some wagons for disposal of ash and coal deliveries

Minor update on shed progress. The back wall, windowless wall and workshop have all be glued together. The plan is to hide the joins between each wall with guttering

The rest will follow in due course but I am waiting delivery of the Brass master windows before I can continue

  • SteamingWales changed the title to Bronant Sheds- Steam MPD in a wrapping paper box

Everything fits nice and snug and after getting a few wagons out the concept in my head and on paper works.

Unfortunately I am at the family home for Christmas so didn't bring the bits of shed I have been working on to see how it looks with locos in it ☹️

The point currently placed are old setrack, the final ones will be Code 75 but for the overall look I'm happy

Had a break from proper modelling over Christmas but back at it now.

The windows for the shed have arrived and a start has been made to fitting them.

This shows the first wall with windows fitted and attached to the wall with the workshop on

The opposite side will be completed in due course but that is currently sat under my tool box trying to flatten out

Whilst waiting for that to happen I have made a start on the plinths and ledges for the outer wall with the guides glued to the appropriate thickness of card

More progress has been made on the shed with the main structure now compete and all the ledges and plinths added.

For now I will be leaving the shed as is so I have the opportunity to add in lighting etc. when the time comesIMG_20200108_181212.jpg.d0903d95f9841363ef790dff84381924.jpg

I have also starting assembly of the baseboards. This is the first section which is 95% complete. I am meerly waiting for the glue to dry

Progress for today.

All the track has been cut to length ready for dropper wires to be soldered in due course. It's nice to see everything slowly coming together and bit just a sketch on paper.

Whilst digging around in my bits crate looking for fishplates I also found these fire buckets in the bottom which I forgot about. Should make a nice addition to the end of the workshop

Your forum states “in a wrapping paper box” .  Given the length of your SMS boards above, & as a past exponent of these boards & boxes, I would be very interested to see your proposed electrical connections between the two boxes needed.  I have achieved these previously, see Kidmore Boxed, but would be glad to see other ideas.

Hi, all the best with your project. Will it be DC or DCC? If the former, Will you be putting in isolation sections in each siding?

Hi 88D

The plan is to run it DCC. Given it is a shed scene with lots of locos running it on DC would just be a pain having to isolated loads of different section

Looks like a great build.
I've used 2 of the large sms baseboards myself. Thinking of using the christmas tree box next time.
I'm loving the whole idea of yours, the extra track adds extra running for the small scene.
Keep at it cannot wait to see what you do.

Thanks for the support.

Your right, having the extra track was to add a bit more operational potential as otherwise it would literally be just run locos in and out which is a bit boring. By having the extra siding there is room for shuffling locos about the shed

My bad the description may be wrong. The SMS board is the longer of the 2 on offer (110cm) and fits snugly in the large Christmas tree storage boxes

After reorganising my tool box I was in the mood for a bit of modelling.

IMG_20200126_094733.jpg.9591530908233d4bf0839d47bbdaf4f2.jpg

Thoughts therefore turned to the backscene and what to do with it and boy it turned out to be a difficult decision (probably spent more time researching and thinking than modelling!). However I concluded:

1. I didn't want to leave it blank as it is rather a large space.

2. I didn't want simple glue on backscene because there isn't enough depth in the board to use one effectively

3. It needed to integrate with the overbridge/fiddle yard divider

This therefore is screaming retaining wall so I set to. At the end of the day it feels as though I didn't really much but it's a start!

Not really on update on progress as there hasn't been any, more of a PROGRESS IS COMING.

So I have recently received the Wills Vari-girder kit enabling me to make a start on the divider for the fiddle yard, as well as some lights from Layouts4U. These will go inside the shed suspended above the 2 roads from the roof supports, then I can think about putting a roof on the shed and completing that area of the layout

First off hoping everyone is staying safe and not going insane. What times we live in.

Life in general has got in the way of modelling recently but with all the extra time we now have I have had opportunity to carry on with the layout.

First thing to be done was the installation of lighting within the shed. This has been done using the hanging lights from Layouts4U. These have been tested and all work, just need to work out how to get the wires down from the shed and through the baseboard.

IMG_20200417_133903-min.jpg.1f4cfd2790b6b7c0a8cb4054967a7867.jpg

Next on the list to be completed was the concrete base for the shed. The Standard 3MT amply demonstrates that the flange clearance is all OK with no derailments (it has been tested with multiple locos)

IMG_20200417_134529-min.jpg.eb151412a3345f6720240991ff2cf174.jpg

The last job has been making a start on the bridge abutments that will form the divider between fiddle yard and main diorama. This is a scratch built card construction and probably took more time planning than actually building, there are so many different prototypes!!!!

I eventually settled on having the main bridge sat on a concrete plinth as this seemed the most common prototype and easiest to model. Just to give an idea of what it will look like with the completed bridge I made up a cardboard mock up of the bridge and I'm quite happy with the way it is going to look. Time to build the damn thing now

Happy modelling and stay safe
