We will b e there with BEIJIAO - REAL WORKING STEAM in 2004 which tells the story of the world's last BIG steam action in China.

May I ask if there are any YOUTUBERS going to Aly Paly.  I would love a video made of my layout showing ALL the operational features the layout can have. We have attended four shows so far and always had electrical problems which has meant that we have had to operate the layout on the KISS principle. However, we now think/hope that all of that is in the past and we look forward to more variety of moves and more ambitious moves.

So if any YOUTRUBERS are going please contact me in advance and we will ensure that you get full co-operation on the day.

I haven't heard from any YOUTUBERS  yet and so I thought I would post this link to the video taken by a German YOUTUBER at the recent Warley show. This was shot 30 minutes from the end on Sunday and we had already started packing some stock away - hence you see the same trains rather more often than I would like. Also we can now do so much more operationally than we were able to do at Warley as we had some electrical problems there. We would like to make a video that really shows what the layout is capable of. Ideally we would like to make a video before the AP show opens so that our own sound effects can be heard over the din of the show - in this video the sound has had to be dubbed on as the background noise drowned out sound chips.

Anyway for all the layout's shortcomings here is a record of Warley so you can see what to expect (but better) at AP...…………………….

There's a proposal to charge for all parking at Ally Pally and the consultation finishes today!

Here's the link:
https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ALLYPALLYPARKING

Also, from October 2021, Ally Pally will be inside the expanded London ULEZ so visiting using a non-compliant vehicle will result in a fine.

Not quite correct Mark - there is a charge you can pay if the vehicle doesn't meet the relevant standard, but if you don't pay the charge on time then there's a fine.

Parking charges= more tax . They better find another venue with better access by public transport in that case !!! Central Hall ?

Yawn. You are assuming a lot:

  • Central Hall isn't a lot more expensive to hire than Ally Pally (Unlikely. Happy to pay more for your ticket? Thought not).
  • Modellers travel by public transport (They don't. Look at the fuss when it's suggested people go to Warley by train).
  • Exhibitors and trade won't be put off by driving into a very central London location (Ally Pally is as easy by road as you are likely to find in London and isn't in the congestion zone).
  • That it wouldn't just be a lot less trouble to stop putting the show on.

Or maybe we could have a quick look at your secret list of cheap, high quality exhibition venues with free parking and excellent low-price catering.

Every venue is a compromise and the organisers have to balance the various requirements. It's not easy, or at least not as easy as frothing on-line. The show for 2020 is at Ally Pally - nothing is going to change that so there's no point in arguing.

GOOD! There is no need to further pollute the planet. I am shocked that a model railway forum would suggest a bitterness of moving to a zero-carbon public transport infrastructure country. I don't care if you do not like it, the 28,000-36,000 people who die every year due to traffic pollution do as does the long term sustainability of the planet. I could go down to a BMW garage tomorrow and buy myself a car, I don't, as I actually care for the impact I have on the environment around me. Those who don't, tough, as we shall transition away from our addiction to polluting whether you want to embrace the change or you are forced to. Now why don't you, this afternoon, get on a train and go for a walk in your local National Park and enjoy life. Ally Pally is superbly well connected by train and legs.

As flattering as it is to see North Ballachulish listed as a P4 layout, it is in actual fact EM Gauge. But what's 0.63 mil between friends lol

Or people just simply dont bother going ?? All my comment had a ? mark, as to where alternatives could be, I live in Essex , Ally Pally is a real pain to get by road or public transport for myself and many others . There are many other venues in and around London , as to their cost no idea as I am not a Exhibition manager.  I use Public Transport all the time in London , much quicker and cheaper than driving., congestion charge and parking are expensive every day of the week.  Judging from the very full trains 90% of the time when I travel , many other people also do the same.

People a will only pay so much for anything , model railways are very far down the list, when people have to pay bills .

I never dare assume anything on here, as I again read the usual politeness and sarcasm from yourself in your comments,. Why do I have read them  on so many occasions, to many people posting on this forum . "Yawn" and the rest , not really required and certainly not needed was it ?

All the ones I know of or can think of have more negatives than the People's Palace. Normally location, followed by eye-watering costs.

I can't argue with that idea that lots of people in London use public transport a lot. However, London is not the same as the rest of the country - public transport is thin to non-existent outside the M25 so extrapolating your experience to the rest of the country doesn't work.

Worse, railway modellers, in my experience, don't like to use public transport to go to shows.

  • There are always moans about suggestions that people avoid NEC parking charges by parking at a nearby station and using the train.
  • When we used to organise a town centre show years ago, talking to modellers at shows would elicit a moan about in-town shows having no parking.
  • I know at least two modellers who are vociferous in their hated of anything other than car travel.

Personally, I much prefer public transport to get anywhere, especially a show, but I know I am very unusual in this.

As I said, there are undoubtedly other exhibition venues in London, but this isn't a show just for Londoners, to cover the breathtaking costs of the hall, you need to attract people from north of Watford. Ally Pally being reasonably (for London) close to both the M4O and M1 is a big help in this respect. I'm pretty sure the MRC are aware of the other options, but for the moment it's Ally Pally.

As the proposed ULEZ extension doesn’t commence until October 2021, I really can`t see much point in discussing the subject now, as its over 2 years away before it may have an impact on the 2022 exhibition. Of course that’s assuming it’s at the same time and location as of now.

Also, as there`s going to be a London Mayoral election this year, there could be a change of political spectrum, resulting in the new Mayor scrapping this proposed ULEZ extension, as Boris did to the western extension of the congestion charge back in 2010.

For future exhibitions, I've decided that my layout will go via a British Railways container, using their door to door service.  I shall follow the Scammel mechanical horse & container on my trusty Raleigh gentleman's safety bicycle.

On a practical note, as well as Alexandra Palace station itself, the venue is an easy trip from Finsbury Park station via bus W3 which will take you right to the door. The buses run every few minutes, and Finsbury Park is served nowadays by Thameslink as well as Victoria & Piccadilly Line trains. It is a really easy trip by public transport if you have a train service into London.

Although for reasons I have never been able to fathom out, the direct mainline railway service goes to/from Moorgate now rather than the far more practical King's Cross!!  Whose idea that was I don't know!!

I agree with the W3 from FPK, though it is quite a long trek through the "estates" to get there. Could be much quicker via the Picc to Wood Green (from FPK or KGX); exit the tube, cross the road and catch the W3 (heading TO FPK), or the free shuttlebus (assuming it runs this year?).

It would be a great shame if parking charges are introduced. My partner can't get up the hill and hence having the drive there. But all this will do for me is that I won't bother going anymore. If you feel strongly on this fill the survey in.
