Looking at the Centenary Collection steam, am I the only one who thinks the prices are high for what they are?

If Hornby wants to do "collectables", how about reproductions of the O gauge tinplate No. 2 Special 4-4-0's?  Of course there is no market for these, no one will buy them, etc.  Tell this to Ace Trains.

Theres been several posts saying the same thing.

 

All I will say is that they are only making 100 of each, and some retailers have already sold out on pre-orders alone. So there must be some people prepared to pay those prices.

Does the PLPR mk2f in this year's range run with the PLPR mk2f from last year or is it an alternative number if making multiple trains?

Most likely 100 people, each willing to splash out a couple of grand on the set of four.

 

Each to his own, but I wouldn't bother with them at a tenth of the price.

One interesting omission: for the first time in years, there's no new Austerity tank in the range. That may or may not be a harbinger of something for 2021.

They both have different running numbers as follows;

 

Hornby R4928 - Network Rail Mk2F Plain Line Pattern Recognition Vehicle 72631

Hornby R4993 - Network Rail ex-BR Mk2F TSO Brake Plain Line Pattern Recognition Vehicle PLPR2 5981

THANK YOU Hornby! (for catering quite a bit to the modern image D&E modeller) This year is by far the only year in recent times where we've had such a large range of D&E models. I could obviously wishlist for more but nonetheless there's quite a spread for D&E people.

Well, this looks like being a wallet-lightening year for me then! Coronation stock is a must.

One question about the Coronation Locos though - The rear truck wheelsets look as though they may be flanged. I'm hoping this may be an option, as I bought my model of 46256 a couple of years back, and am still looking for a trailing truck flanged wheelset as a replacement for what I think are horrible flangeless wheels. I'm also looking at making the rear truck pivot as it should. Does anyone know if replacement flanged rear truck wheelsets are available?

 

Also, the A2/2 & A2/3s look tantalising, as do the models of 10000 & 60700. Well done Hornby!

Mike's warning is wise - keep your pets away from the letterbox! I was genuinely surprised at its monster weight when I checked out the copies on sale in Tesco at Wisbech. I guess Hornby must have paid for 'prime placing' as they are at eye-level in the most prominent place, whereas all the other railway/model magazines are tucked away at the back corner at floor level. 

 

For those on here wanting to understand about the Railroad range, what's on offer buildings-wise etc, then the catalogue answers all those questions in a format that's much easier to use than the web.

 

I have to say, it's a magnificent beast that's worthy of the anniversary and, IMHO, well worth the £9.99 (especially when compared with the price of a typical magazine at around a fiver).

Peters Spares sell them. If you search x8007 for the full acc pack with flanged wheelset. Seems there's only one so it may be the wrong colour.

there are a number of PLP trains so they NORMALLY run in different rakes however if a vehicle is needed for brake force in a train one could be added to the rake (but be unmanned) 
 

a nice train to model using Hornby coaches would be Genny van-plp coach-radio survey coach-brake end support coach with a pair of 37s top and tail 

 

 

The SGT support coach is a bit of an oddity as Mick points out unless they release the windowless coach which is actually the support coach, the one they are releasing is permanently coupled to it so it’s never going to be seen in a train on its own without its sister, normally the SGT runs within a UTU train such as this, one I worked to Marylebone a few years back

Funnily enough I have those two 37s for this exact purpose!

 

I have the two coaches from last year (PLPR and radio), I have a MK1 BG generator on pre order from Bachmann and then the brake force runner and the gauging support coach on order from Hornby from this year's range. Although could probably do with knocking one off the order as I have 4 carriages at the moment (2 old mk2 airfix resprays I will sell) and the train is long enough with the 37s on too really. To me this means if I get rid of the gauging coach then it's very similar to the first pic?

I'm guessing that they are doing the two Mk 2F brakes that have been converted for escort coaches (to go along with the Mk 2A escort coaches) for the KUAs.

IIRC only 43014 and 43123 wore executive with buffers- and WCML West Midlands-Euston modellers may wish to know that they performed the TDM trials in that livery prior to the Mk3 DVT order. Note that those two also had extra ETH jumbers (just about visible in the shot of 123 above the right hand buffer). The other six were converted in 1988 so would have had full yellow front swallow, from around 1991 repaints omitted the yellow around the windscreen and the new Hornby models are right for c1992-c1998, except that 065 wasn't named until February 1996. 065 went Virgin in November '98 (and 123 went Virgin in Feb '99) so without mods the duo in the 2020 catalogue are correct for Feb '96 to Nov '98.

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't GNER also have a buffered HST around 1998 as 43067 and 43080 as spares until about 2005? Think they passed over to Grand Central after that but there is another idea for the buffered HST. But that's for another topic. Anyway I think my bank account is going be taking a virtual kick in with all those new model trains on my shopping list and I am just about to order the 2020 Hornby Brochure right now! .

Yes, both of those went to GNER, and both painted into GNER livery for their stint there. Not as spares but as daily use refurb cover whilst another two ex Virgin cars were put through works upgrading them to GNER's standard. If you are thinking of doing two and putting them either end of the same GNER rake then don't- they were not allowed to run together as neither had the reliability mods!
