No mention of them in the instructions as far as I can see Michael, I'm following them for once too.

Thanks btw it's a lovely model to make. Sods law I'm half way through assembling the front spectacle plate & the power has gone down.

Keighley has the worst electrics in the world

My mistake, the 4'6" locos didn't seem to have had them, I was thinking of the 5'6" 2-4-2Ts.

I'd planned a full morning in the workshop on saturday but nothing ever goes to plan.

What's worse is the sinusitis has come for its annual attack on me & floored me once again.

To try to take my mind off the pain I had a little session today & got the tanks & specticle plate soldered together. I've also soldered the boiler tube up at the seam & fitted the rear former in so I can bolt it to the loco.

A few more sessions itll be well on it's way to being complete.

About 18 months ago I built a djh caley tank in 00 for a planned layout of the killin branch.

It never came off & its languished on a shelf for ages. I decided to just finish it off as one of the four locos that were shedded at Manningham. They were used on the Aire valley lines to Keighley & Ilkley so a real local engine.

A friend of mine Harry he told me a story about when he was at keighley station & one was sat in the bay, he scratched the paint off with a coin to reveal caley blue. Just one of his many stories about steam in the west riding.

Screenshot_20200928-221629_Gallery.jpg.e57cb1892865b4ed3ea86648104ee767.jpg

I've just put the transfers, a crew & coal to finish the body. I've fitted it with a markits gearbox which I'm not at all thrilled with so I've ordered a djh gearbox for it as I really like those. I've also re gauged it to Em so it fits in nicely on Bodgers brow although I'm pushing the modeller licence a bit getting a caley tank to Greater Manchester

Very pleased with the end result of this build it was a lovely little kit to make.

About 4 years ago I was at my clubs exhibition & me & my mate was having a wander looking at the stalls.

He came back & said here I bought you this for a fiver. It was a ratio kit for a lnwr brake composite coach.

It took me 18 months to start building it & once I had completed it, it ended up moving from pillar to post around the workshop without a view to finishing it off. Originally I had planned to paint it black & add it to the group breakdown train but in the end I got my layout going & it's now going to be part of my second small rake of coaches for the layout.

I've used hmrs pressfix transfers to line it out & number it, I've still a few finishing touchs to do on it but I'm very pleased with the finished model. A very nice coach that even if I had to buy new wouldnt be a lot of money.

Next up is the 4ft 6  tank update.

I've had a session today on the model & got a bit of the boiler done. It's a great kit but I have found that a section of the instructions is written wrongly & as a result I'm going to have to go back to fix an issue regarding the body mounting screws.

It is however creeping ever closer to becoming a locomotive. I am hoping to get the outer wrapper mounted tomorrow & maybe some boiler fittings fitted. I think once the 3 main castings for the boiler are mounted it looks like a loco from there on in.

  • Simon Moore changed the title to P4 industrials page 4

I've not updated my page for ages so thought i would give this an update.

After years of modelling in em i decided to dip my toe & go for something in p4. My first model was a mercian models barclay diesel. The quality of this kit was poor & the brass was far to thin in my opinion. I've built a number of mercian kits & they are all the same. The coal tank i made i scrapped most of it because the parts were poor.

The barclay diesel i had originally attempted in em & somehow made a real mess of the chassis. I thought it was worth a try to see if i could make it in p4. Turns out it was a success with a really nice slow running model. Again i had to throw away parts & build my own because the kit was of poor quality. The bonnet had no structural integrity with the brass being as thin as it was.

On several occasions this model nearly went in the bin but i persevered & it turned out ok in the end. I've still a few bits to finish it off mainly the cab details & glazing.

My next foray in p4 is a kit of far better quality from Judith edge.

This is a thomas hill steelman royale which has been a joy to build so far. I was lucky enough to get a black beetle of the correct wheelbase from branchlines. It does need rewheeling to 14mm disks but the 12mm are fine for now.

I had a session on the steelman yesterday & i got all the handrails fitted & some body details.

Its not far off finished this now then i can start painting it.

Both locos look to be excellently made, as for the power unit would a High Level Low Rider work as its an 8' 6" wheelbase ?

http://www.highlevelkits.co.uk/loriderpage.html

I dare say it would, the black beetle seems to be a decent runner & once completed I'm sure it will be even better once weight has been added. I didn't fancy making mods on this for a high level chassis to fit.

  • Simon Moore changed the title to P4 industrials judith edge & mercian models page 4

Firstly happy new year everyone, hopefully its better than last year & we can get back to normality.

I've had a nice start to the year & the Judith edge steelman royale is now completed & ready for paint. I have some parts still to fit but they won't be fitted until paintwork is done.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've not done a great deal recently. I've been doing night trunking in the wagon & its been very tiring adjusting to nights then going back to days.

I have however been slowly working on a p4 16t mineral wagon with a rumney models sprung chassis kit.

The body i made ages ago & i have been making progress on the chassis slowly.

A very nice kit with lots of detail & the part fit has been exceptional.

I have just purchased two 21t hopper chassis kits so i can make some ncb wagons. I want some Dave Bradwell ncb hopper etches so i can make stock for my incline railway i want to make.

  • Simon Moore changed the title to A humble 16t mineral in p4

I had a goal to finish this 16t mineral off before the end of this week. On monday it was still very much a work in progress but over the course of the week it has progressed to finish.

I sprayed the body earlier this week with a pheonix enamel & then a gloss varnish to sit the transfers on.

The parkside kit gives you a set but the white stripe is very oversized so i ordered a sheet from fox.

This afternoon i got all the last parts fitted to the chassis & painted it up. I think it turned out exceptionally well.

20210117_222600.jpg.f9b494854c60830bb6c9869bbae8e844.jpg20210117_222607.jpg.052e5198ef224b0bca2d1a4cafc54f7d.jpg20210117_222702.jpg.0b9a032e667c862833a5d02c28bf3f14.jpg

The wagon is a mix of parkside for the body, rumney models sprung chassis, gibson wheels & lanarkshire models buffers.

I'm not much of a wagon basher, i have never been one for making wagons but this has really spurred me on to make more.

Coming up some rumney / parkside 21t hoppers, rt models slag ladles & some slaters ne wooden hoppers all in p4.

Nicely done, Justin's chassis makes all the difference, especially when compared with the plastic alternatives.

I await being shot down, but I believe, as built, when viewed from the brake side the end door should be to the left.

Mike.

Mike cheers for the info on the door. The body is still to be glued to the chassis so i can change that & make it right.

  • Simon Moore changed the title to Some Lnwr & pre grouping stuff in EM

Whilst i am still dabbling in P4 i have gone back to doing some EM models for Bodgers Brow plus the lnwr bits i have to finish off.

Firstly the 4ft6 tank has progressed some & i will be ploughing ahead this next week to get it finished off.

20210118_143519.jpg.ee32ba295bc763b7b3f5d8eeeac6db59.jpg

I am also working on finishing off a craftsman johnson 1p tank. I got the gearbox fitted to this Friday evening & gave it a quick test run & it ran very smoothly so it can be painted up now.

20210121_201757.jpg.9a5b029727b22432d0629a451af2ba5b.jpg

I have a ever growing stash of wagons that i have found i really enjoy making. I have a selection of pre grouping wagons so i decided to make a North Staffordshire silk wagon from wizard models.

20210124_115806.jpg.fe85a9da9d28f0fdb2ad5d9ce990845d.jpg

I have added a plate of nickel silver inside the body instead of plasticard so i can solder all the underframe details to, i don't like plasticard floors. This model doesn't come with w irons, you need to buy mjt rtr compensation units for it which i made up this afternoon. The castings for this kit are excellent & make up very easily without much faff.

I have also got out a falcon brass lnwr 0-8-2 tank i want to build to run on Bodgers Brow which i am looking forward to building. A challenging model i imagine.

The Jidenco kit for the LNW 0-8-2T is a lot better than may of them.

47877.JPG.8a3f1c1cdec00baae401cab21d7648d7.JPG

47877 posed for its photograph at Herculaneum Dock, although it doesn't actually run here. This is what the last one looked like in early BR days at Edge Hill. I built this in 1979 using Sharman wheels and a big Sagami motor, it has done many miles on various layouts since then.

It has also had to survive a fall to the floor from one layout, it got a bit bent around the front but was straightened successfully. It worked for many years as the principal gravity yard shunter on Cwmafon but has been unemployed for the last decade or so.

Just found your thread Simon, very much enjoyed reading through it. The small diesel shunters are not my usual fare but you make them look so attractive I found myself thinking about building one.

I've particularly looked at the LRM 4'6" tank your working on, as I'm currently on my firs LRM kit, a C12 tank - as you say, very fine piece of workmanship in the kit,

Best wishes, Chas

Well if it can survive the years & falls to the floor its doing well. I think i have got most of the parts ready for mine now although strangely its missing brake hangers

Last night i had a full evening in my workshop & got the 4ft6 tank progressed further.

All the main castings have been fitted to the boiler which i always think is a real moment in the build of any loco. I built the front bufferbeam which is a lovely fold up unit that also has the frame extensions fitted to it. This was all soldered to the footplate & this is ready for the final details fitting.

The cab sides were fitted & that is the cab unit completed.

I also spent some time last night cleaning up some more parts of cusp & the castings flash. Tonight i hope to have another session on the model & get it somewhere near finished.

Enjoying it very much thanks!

I have a J Edge kit stashed, an NER electric and I always hear good things about them :good:

Loving the latest 4'6" pic!

For some daft reason i keep waking up long before the alarm for work goes off. As a result of this last night my planned trip into the workshop didn't happen. The only thing i managed last night was to put a coat of gloss black onto the Craftsman Johnson 1p.

20210127_055359.jpg.c78edc75983cc8f81b2be534ce9b4254.jpg20210127_055411.jpg.ac07e9d3171bd9bfaad1417d342d0ec3.jpg

I had a look this morning & the paints covered very well, depending on how i go with the lnwr tank i might get some lining done this evening.
