Outside the conventional catalogue and traditional toy and hobby market Hornby are creating a separate range under the nostalgic Bassett-Lowke branding to appeal to the currently popular Steampunk genre. At the December press event a presentation was given to show the range, the slides for which are shown below.

Yet another attempt to jazz up the old four-wheel locos and rolling stock. Chances of this lasting past two years?

It'll last longer than that. In terms of unsold stock, at least.

Hi,

When the steam-driven boy saw the topic title his first thought was about having to add OO to his addiction. He's relieved to see it's only resulted in a much needed Monday morning outburst of laughter and a feeling of sadness for the beloved B-L brand name.

Regards, Gerry.

I don’t want to be critical, and hopefully this is a new market that’s going to deliver for Hornby but I do need to ask - who looked at a literal steam locomotive and thought “this needs to be more steampunk”?

Oh dear. Oh dear oh dear.

Not only are Hornby risking a repeat of the 2012 disaster by ploughing a lot of effort into a range which might not sell, they're devaluing the Bassett-Lowke name in the process.

The Bassett-Lowke name will mean nothing to Steampunk fans, and to use a name historically associated with well-engineered premium products on models derived from Smokey Joe and the Hornby 4 wheel coaches is somewhat akin to putting a Vanden Plas badge on an Austin Allegro....

Not entirely correct there. A whole bunch of SPs around here are also railway buffs!
