This is the start of a N gauge layout. I had been follow Andy P with his Argyll Street in OO. I liked his initial plan and asked if I could copy it. He agreed! He then went on to modify it to be nothing like the original. So now I am not copying it at all!

The size is 6’x18” and made from 9mm plywood screwed and glued.

The track plan was layed out with flexy track to see it would fit.

Andy had a board size of 10’x18”, so I could have done it in 5’x9” for a carbon copy.

I had a 6’x18” board, I would have a bit more room to play with. I planned the layout to use trains with the length of a class 47 with seven 15’ wheelbases wagons (HEA,TTA, etc).

This equivalent length can give:

3x mk2 coaches

3xGUV/BG

3xTEA tankers

3xFFA container flats.

2x two car DMU

A sector plate was cut out of the back left hand side. It will have six tracks. Four for the yard and two for the passenger line at the back.

Hard work today.

laided track for the yard area and wired up droppers for a test run. Will work out where I will need isolators after some testing and playing.

The sector plate had a surround fitted to stop trains falling off and give it strength.

Holes were drilled for point operation to be fitted later.

Decision time!

The small station at the back right.

I want to run DMUs to it and also have short parcel trains unload at one of the platforms.

Do I just have the single line split into two dead end island platform roads or have a run round loop to release the parcel trains locomotive?

The line beyond, having been truncated at some point.

The parcel train will take up one platform  loading/unloading. Whilst the the other will be for the DMU service. In peak times both platforms will be used for DMUs.

Any ideas? Do come forward!

Following along Craig - looks like a good start with plenty of operating potential.  I do like the huge amount of space since my move back to 2mm - just wish the N gauge stock was a bit more prolific like 4mm, and that you could get hold of it!  Seems thin on the ground in places...

If you go for two single track terminal platforms, it gives you the ability to shunt release the stock - bit like one of Ian Futre's (wrong spelling I think) station O gauge layouts.  Perhaps a headshunt off one of the platforms to hold the stock and station pilot?  You could always include a couple of carriage sidings for berthing DMUs overnight and parcel stock during the day?

And I was thinking a bit like Birmingham Moor Street, or a Minories but with a Loco trapped at the Buffers, i.e. on Parcels Stock, it's the ideal excuse for the Shunter to move Stock and then have Light Engine movements.

mMMMMmmmm it's given me another idea for a Layout, haha.:paint:

Join the cool team and go 2mm Andy - room for three layouts in the space of Privett Green :P  hehe.  You know you enjoyed your West Highland 2mm dabble!  Sorry for diverting the conversation Craig!

This is the first sector plate I have made. Why do jigsaws cut straight when you want a curve and curved when you want a straight? I got there in the end to make all roads access the road nearest the edge. Track is wired, but not connected. It will, like the rest of the layout be wired on a cab, common return system. I will have to make a brass tube alignment system to positive lock the three exit tracts and provide power. As this is analogue DC, I need the tracks to be unpowered when not in use.

Track has been held down with small screws until I glue down with ballast. This helps with making any changing found in the testing/playing stage.

There will be copper clad sleepers on the track ends to maintain alignment.

I have now worked out the track for the station area at the back. Two platforms, one with a run round loop and the other a bay. The run round loop has the extension siding for the odd loco or parcels carriage.

The plan is to run various lengths of DMUs, with some units splitting and leaving one behind. (Dummy one!). Parcel trains, which are loaded/unloaded in the bay. One idea is dropping a parcels van and having it continue its journey as tail traffic with a DMU! I have heard this still occurred in the early 1980s.

Also diesel hauled  three carriage trains. It looks ok with mk1s not to sure with mk2 air cons? The idea of through carriages I think finished in the early 1970s?

Well that is the hole cut out for a canal!

I can now start putting in the bracing under the baseboards. I had left them out as they always go where a point motor has to go!!

You can guess this project has not been fully thought out before I started, but has evolved.
