I agree with some of that.

Ferrari seem to prefer a No1 & 2 instead of equal drivers.

They appear to like Leclerc & want him as No1. If Vettel does not want to be a No2, then surely they are better off apart.

But Sainz is no No2 either. I did not think there was much between him & Verstappen at Toro Rosso. Verstappen was quicker on his day, but Sainz seemed to be more consistent. He did well in his (midfield) McLaren last year though. I just don't think he is the right driver for their No1 & 2 philosophy.

They should observe the data. There were two seasons in his time at Ferrari, when on the quality of the car he should have run Merc down to the wire for the championship, and then last year the new guy on the team comfortably outperformed him, and this provoked several misjudgements. That's not a trajectory that suggests future championships are in his grasp, which is what a team with Ferrari's standing are surely aiming at. Better to move on to whatever new hot sauce is on offer.

Looking at the dates in Wikipedia this will be their second longest period without a Constructors championship after this year will it not? Maybe they think a radical change of strategy is needed.

In an ideal world, Ferrari (or any other team) would have an older 'star' driver and a younger  'apprentice', who would race together for a number of years, ideally first and second in the championship, until such a time as the 'star' driver retired. The 'apprentice' would then step into the vacant shoes of the 'star' driver and a new 'apprentice' would join the team. That's effectively the situation Mercedes have now with Hamilton and Bottas. However it's not always easy to achieve such a pairing -last year at Ferrari, the apprentice outscored the star in his first season. Similarly Alonso and Hamilton at McLaren in 2007. Other times, the drivers have been too close in age or experience - if the #2 driver knows he isn't going to have several years in the sport after #1 retires, he can't simply wait his turn - this either leads to intense rivalry between teammates, and clashes on track (Hamilton and Rosberg) or the second driver being held back by the team.

That's what Ferrari tried to have last year, but Vettel made too many errors under pressure & Leclerc improved during the season.

They seem more bothered about driver's championship.

If they want a radical change, they should look beyond their drivers. Their success in the 2000s was due to 1 man: Jean Todt.

Todt took several years to re-build the team his way, signing Brawn & Schumacher in the process.

The company directors seem to want an Italian they can control. I have no issue with patriotism but the way they seem to interfere with things appears to prevent them from being a winning team.

Bottas will never be world champion, not unless Hamilton pulls out due to injury mid season, if Hamilton hangs up his gloves they will bring somebody else in to go for the championship. Bottas is a journeyman not a champion in waiting, he's not consistent enough, he didn't finish 2nd enough times last year.

It does look that way, but if it wasn't for Renault's order for Piquet to crash in Singapore, Massa would have won the title in 2008.

He was understandably upset about this when it was discovered.

He had several bits of bad luck that year, but accepts them all, but considers the crash to have cheated him from the title.

Whilst Hamilton is clearly a much more talented racer than Bottas, mathematically the difference isn't as big as you might think.

Lewis had 11 wins and 4 second places for 419 points (including 6 for fastest laps).

However if we remove Lewis from the results for each race, Valtteri would have won 10 with 4 second places, and scored 385 points (not counting any redistribution of Lewis's fastest laps), but had two retirements, one of which (Brazil) was due to a hydraulics failure and the other (Germany) due to skidding off a wet track on a day when pretty much everyone else also did, including Lewis. Had it not been for those, Bottas would have scored well over 400 points - not too shabby!

However I will grant you that whereas Lewis has natural talent, Valtteri is more of a grafter so whilst he may well go on to win more than one championship, I'll agree he won't win six!

Hah! Instant Karma and well done to Stoffel and JEV for noticing...to be able to be certain of it just from watching the driving style of the other car is quite impressive!

Sorry a bit OT from F1, but Audi have just suspended Daniel Abt for the above infringement....

Interesting one, usually suspension means...sacking?

Audi, as part of VAG, comes from a background espousing impeccable values, of course. Dieselgate, Emissionsgate, you name it cheating millions of buyers whose cars were bigger polluters than they knew. Holier than thou.

Looks like Austria is set to be the season opener in July.

I wonder how many races they will try to shoehorn in between mid July and the end of the year.

It looks as though the UK has agreed to host two.

During the first decade of F1, the number of races annually run was between 7 and 11, though that did include the Indy 500.

Other sports have started with differences so why shouldn't it be possible.

Pro snooker started yesterday with a tournament behind closed doors. On arrival, all players were tested for Covid & placed in isolation, only being allowed to play after their tests came back clear.

I see no reason why something similar cannot work with F1.

Are there any other sports with that many team members in such a small space for multiple days, thinking mainly the mechanics at this point?

Rebuilding a car between FP3 and qualifying in either ppe or at a distance will be interesting to see...

We should now be at a point where tests are reliable & everybody can be screened when they arrive at a venue, then the entire venue can be declared a quarantine.

Once you are sure that the virus does not exist within the quarantine area, there should be no need for social distancing.

The key is being sure that nobody within the quarantine is infected.

Really bad news for all at Woking and wider afield, here in Pompey there is a firm that makes parts for the Road and Race Cars. It's also bad news for Danial Riccardo who once again seems to have gone down the wrong road.

I hope for all concerned it can turn things around somehow.

Add to this the fact that Williams F1 is also up for sale, and things don't look at all healthy for F1.

Things have a habit of being rescued at the 11th hour in F1.

It looked pretty bleak for the team in Brackley when Honda pulled out after the 2008 season, but things turned around very quickly.

The first race of the season is just over a week away. Shall we talk about that instead?
