When was the now replaced bridge installed?

Cheers

I think it was 1908, but I wouldn't like to swear by it.  When I was a signalman at Goathland in the 1990s an old guy called George (Grayson?) who lived in the old mill at the north end of the station used to come in for a chat and he could remember the bridge being replaced when he was a child.  Originally bridge 27 only had the Up and Down Main on it, the depot siding was accessed via a very tight radius turnout off the Up line which came off the north (Grosmont) side of the bridge and went through a diamond crossing in the down (not a single slip as later) and onto its current formation.  When the 3rd span was installed for the depot siding the signalbox was moved forward slightly I believe.

Anyway here's a pic courtesy of the NRM via the NYMR archive and John Hunt.  Note the whinstone crushing/loading plant in the background.

This week has seemed fairly quiet by comparison to last week, with the old bridge removed it allowed the stone abutments to be reduced in height and repaired before the new concrete sill beams are added.  in addition the remaining part of bridge 27 that will carry the siding has been cleaned up and painted whilst it is accessible.

The big Kirov 1200 is only here until the end of January as it is needed for a job near Lowestoft in February.  It goes back to Grosmont on the 25th January with a view to using the MPD facilities for servicing and then departs on the evening of the 29th.

The smaller Kirov, the 810 will be at the NYMR until March I believe as once bridge 27 has been completed there is another bridge near Pickering to replace, bridge 8.

Just to give you some idea of why bridge 8 also needs to be replaced, this is the wear on one of the abutments.

Busy day on site today, both trimmers have been placed on top of the sill beams and a deck beam laid.  The plan is for the 2nd beam to go in tomorrow and then get the deck on.  Also a lot of concrete is due to be delivered fairly soon!

Hi.

Is anyone aware of any news updates, pictures etc of the works to replace this bridge over Eller Beck, please?

I've found 3x YouTube videos so far and I gather from these that the bridge parts have been delivered to site and that a Kirow crane arrived at Goathland yesterday, so if anyone knows of any other sites / threads with relevant information, I'm sure I'm not the only one that would be interested.

Thanks in advance.

Have a look at these videos.

Regards,

Geoff

Is there no ribs to the girders?  It will look like a 60s motorway bridge

Hi Geoff

Thanks for these suggestions - much appreciated.

If you look further down the thread, you'll see that a couple of the local guys are posting updates as the works progress and they are including the videos and also a whole load of pictures and news.

Thanks again.

What you see is what you get I'm afraid, I would have liked fake rivets along the tops as well personally.

I'm pretty sure there are stiffeners (ribs) on the outer faces of the girders - they're visible in the films of the new bridge being delivered. There was mention of fake rivets on the NYMR bridge 27 page;

https://www.nymr.co.uk/goathland-bridges-renewal

but maybe they've been omitted (or maybe they're using Archer resin rivet transfers....?)

https://www.archertransfers.com/AR88051.html

One question for those in the know - there is no centre girder on the new bridge deck, and the new girder on the goods yard side will be closer to the tracks (to fit alongside the remaining girder of the old bridge) so presumably the tracks will need to be slued closer together than they were previously?

Thanks for the photos of the work Boris

Andy

It looks bridge like now chaps, they got the 2nd beam in yesterday and the deck girders in today.

You are right Andy, having looked at it properly there are indeed ribs on the outside,  and i think photograph 3 answers your other question?

Shame they couldn't have made the girders the same height as the old ones, it looks a bit of a mess. I understand its cost an absolute fortune and was necessary but a classic view as been lost now

I'm reserving judgement until I've seem it all put together with track etc.  Driving past from the road it doesn't look massively intrusive, but my inner nerd would have liked to see something a bit more heritage looknig.  Then again you can't have everything, at the end of the day it means you can still see steam trains running, which was at risk if the bridge wasn't done.

Perhaps, once it's in and it gets a final coat of paint, especially if it's a similar colour to the new Ordsall Chord bridge, then it will blend in nicely?

As Boris rightly says, had this work not been done then NYMR operation would well have been at risk.

All that aside, it's a pretty big job that's been done, and it would appear to all be on time too. Transport coordinated, cranes appearing on schedule, workforce in place etc...  Well done all.

After all the activity recently it has been a relatively quiet week bridge wise, prepping the deck for its concrete by adding the rebar, but the remaining span has also had another coat of paint.

Other than that the rest of the activity has been logistical, the road railer has gone to Pickering for the Bridge 8 project and the Kirow 1200 was taken to Grosmont MPD on Saturday to allow the crane staff to service it prior to departing today.
