The loco really needs a crew! ;)

Original Tri-ang Railways figurescate good, but not so easy to find.

There is a crew in the Airfix, now made by Dapol, Rocket plastic kit...

The rest of the kit could be sold on, or used as parts to make something...

A crew is included in the box, not sure about the yellow boxed pack but there's a crew in the Tri-ang/red boxed version.

I think its been said previously that the included crew are similar to the original Tri-ang crew.

Mine arrived today. Definitely a display cabinet model. I’m actually glad that Hornby didn’t try and compromise the way it looks to make it run better. Tender drawbar is a pain though. Semi permanently attached would help protect those thin connecting wires. DCC fitting needs very careful choice of decoder.

That's good to know. :)

It was that photo of the train by the tunnel that looked 'wrong', without the crew... ;)

Yes, sorry, my fault.  They were still in the box.  They have locating pins in their feet to aid positioning

Its a lovely little model, though I admit I am slightly puzzled why Hornby chose to omit the rudimentary buffering gear (i.e. a plank of wood) which is strapped to the prototype whenever it hauls anything (including the supplied coaches). We have already established that by the time said coaches were actually built for the L&M, Rocket itself look considerably different from that which 'won' the Rainhill trials and which the current replica represents.

Lovely shot with the Peckett!

I wonder what Rocket would look like against a Ruston&Hornsby?

Unless someone has scratchbuilt a 4mm Big Boy it’s not going to look quite so impressive in 3.5mm ;)

A guess a Heljan/Hattons Garratt would suffice.....

I’m still waiting for your NR maintenance version  . . . ;)

of course it’ll need a catchy buzz phrase on each of the coach sides too,

’Moving forward’      ‘Slowly’       ‘Push?’

My Hornby one had been paid for, & was waiting for me to collect from Rails, which I changed today. They will now send it by post, but I've asked them to try to send just one package, containing the blue coach as well. They happily have said they will oblige. I can wait a little longer.

Are you sure thats a good idea. By the time the blue coach is available R3810 could quite likely be sold out at Rails, Hornby and everywhere else so if its faulty...

Rails are hardly likely to sell his one to someone else.

I think his point was more along the lines of what happens when its delivered in a few weeks/months and like mine doesn't work.

Mine went back to Bure Valley Models - they don't have any to replace with so option was refund or they could try and send it to Hornby for repair but I think they said Hornby's service dept doesn't even reopen till next week.

I did however take the chance that it can be fixed by Hornby so in hopefully a week or so I'll find out.....

I imagine if Hornby eventually come back and say "nope, can't repair" I'll just have to take the refund and cry :(

The money has been taken off my card for the set, it was waiting for me to collect. The coach is pre-ordered. I emailed them, asking them to post, together if possible. They agreed, no problem, they normally will hold for 8 weeks. If the coach doesn't appear before then they will sent them separately. I didn't query it, but when I put my pr-order in for the coach, it said "Out of Stock" (as I expected) - but "Expected in 2-3 Days"(!). (That note has since disappeared).

If it is faulty I will fix it of course.

My R3810 was paid for at the weekend and I sent Rails an email asking when I could collect it.  I had pre-ordered the blue coach so they replied that they would hold  my R3810 until I could collect both.  Then I asked when the blue coach would be available and was told it would be a while.  I've now agreed to collect my R3810 later this week and wait for news of the blue coach to make another journey to Sheffield to collect that order.

As a lockdowner, it will be a treat to go all the way to Sheffield and back for change of scenery and get a bit of charge in the car battery.  I wonder how much litter there is now on the Dronfield by-pass?  Last time I drove along it, there was so much it was a complete disgrace and a sad reflection on the behaviour of fellow citizens in the current situation.

Well, today I made a visit to Monk Bar Models in York, and bought R3810. Rocket was carefully tried out on the test track, in the shop, and was initially a bit jerky in each direction. Then the track was cleaned, and it then ran faultlessly each way, which it continues to do.
Everything about this model, and the carriages looks so good, and so here’s a photo’ of it on my layout.

Best regards,

 Rob.

Both excellent models in their own right, and both were things I've dreamt of owning since I was incredibly young! I can still remember fawning over the Little Hobby advert on the back of every issue of my dad's Railway Modeller and their promises of the big UP!

Cheers

Please see my two posts of 24th March on this thread.

Converted to 'Next 18' and happy with the solution.

Hope you find a satisfactory solution too!

One benefit of the reduction of traffic was the pleasing sight of no road side Litter. A complete Joy. There are some Certainly people that dont have any pride in thier surroundings.

Enjoy your trip and Rocket.

I have just done the same! I can't believe how small it is. Beautifully packaged up by Derails arriving this morning. I shall have a play tonight once I have finished work.
