Hornby W1 Hush Hush

Seems to be a bit of a lottery atm whether the model you buy will A. Turn up or B. Turn up undamaged. Hope this isn't the case for these models.

Off topic question and not sure if it's been asked before. But does anyone know how many beats per revolution the W1 did? Read some different claims it was 4 beats or 8 like a Lord Nelson.

Well, everyone, here’s the promised photo’s of 10000. They were taken in artificial light, so are not too perfect, but I hope they give some idea of how good this model is.

TMC now give 'page not found' for R3840 and R3841.

The R3840 I bought yesterday was despatched by Royal Mail to me with all the usual order number information. Tracking number, and so on.

The only place left I have found to have stock is

https://www.modelrailwaysdirect.co.uk/locomotives-steam/Hornby-r3840-lner-class-w1-hush-hush-4-6-4-10000-era-3/

16 yesterday, 11 today.

No connection

I'm sure there are other sellers with stock but not many. And there is always Ebay... ?

Not sure how they know what it would sound like (?) but found this video which shows one running at least

Considering the original was a four cylinder compound with unusually high initial pressure, they can't.

There is a rumor that Locomansounds will be launching various W1 projects in January and I fully trust their technical expertise. They did a good research and sound re-engineering with the Thompson A2 and reproduced the sounds very convincingly so I'm wondering how they implement the high-pressure sounds of the W1. This will be a positive surprise for sure.

The one thing which impresses me is the sheer finesse of the valve gear and above-cylinder detail, Hornby are very, very good at this.

As to the packaging styles, mention was made of the transit brackets used around 2008-11 on Std 4MTs and Schools among others, and they worked well, but it meant that few were sold second hand with the brackets re-installed and thus many s/h models are damaged.

I am sure a lot of effort goes into designing packaging for minimal damage, but delivery systems can be brutal, so there are always frustrating losses for both buyers and manufacturers.

It looks very nice and is the one I did have ordered until Hornby cancelled all but one of the pre-orders my local model shop had made

One thing though, in the first photo, it looks like the flangeless wheel in the Cartazzi truck is no where near the top of the rail?

That'll be partly caused by the engine being on a curve, making the wheel inboard and increasing the impression of a gap. Perchance?

Could be, just a shame when we've had Simon Kohler on the TV for the last 9 weeks telling us all how vital it is to get all the details right...

But, yes, I appreciate it has to be able to negotiate 'train set' curves.

Actually, that leads to a question, does it come with a set of replacement, flanged wheels?

So I have some pictures to share with everyone. Email has been sent already to Hornby direct, as I bought it direct thankfully, overseas too.

Both sides of the smoke deflectors have snapped off. (Not fixable)

The hole for the tender drawbar screw is broken. (Fixable, no issue).

I have not test ran this. Straight out of the box. I don’t want to dare damage anything more.

I’m not saying anything bad or good. This is what I received. Overall, the model looks great, fine detail. But I am flustered with this issue, so makes me torn.

EDIT: From what I can tell, there is a huge void which is causing the front of the loco to be shifted inside the plastic, which creates a pinch point for the smoke deflectors. I’ve added a pic showing this massive void. There should be some kind of positive reinforcement like the usually have towards the front. BUT this is how I received my box from DHL. Already opened. Tape torn off. (wasn’t home so I did the pre-sign). No bubble. No box damage either, for any box. So either the plastic is super brittle where even just normal movement can break it or factory did this before being sent out

And already going bid silly :o

It's only half price (so far), not bad for only one piece of broken plastic.

Thanks Ribird - my 2 Thompson A2/3s both arrived here in Australia with similar damage but with the packaging un damaged. So I hope my W1 does not arrive in the same state. It really does look like the damage is done pre packing and if so I`m not sure what needs to be done about that. Now mine is on the way from Hornby direct and is in the US according to the delivery tracking site - so fingers crossed it was not damaged before shipment  - I`ll let you know in about 10 days.

Goodness gracious, sorry you had to receive it in that condition. My heart sank just looking at it! Couldn't help but notice the plastic flash on the tender wheel in that last photo, as well.

So many issues that go far beyond damage in transport... there's so much fishy going on with this company. I think they ought to concentrate on this sort of thing instead of blabbering about on telly
