Oakford Lane PW Depot

My neat(ish) collection of wires for my point motors and switches.

The layout has front and back control for the points, this is to enable me to take it to exhibitions but also use it from the front at home.

Track power is provided via NCE power cab, currently the point control is powered from a gaugemaster combi, I will be sourcing a separate power supply for that soon.

It has been tested using my 08 which has gone over it all flawlessly.

I have done more ballasting, so whilst that is drying I have decided to crack on with whatever scenic work I am able to on the micro.

I started by picking out the green leaves from my autumn mix because I intend to make ivy.

Using single strand rubberised horse hair I made the main structure of the ivy and glued it onto the wall using super glue.

I then painstakingly applied the leaves individually, using 2 old craft knives and handles. Dab it into rocket card glue and then press it against the vines themselves, I had to use 2 knives because the tip of the blade would sometimes hold onto the leaf more than the glue would hold it onto the vine.

It has been a busy week since the last update.
I have added dirt to the concrete hardstanding using MIG black weathering powders, mostly concentrated round the rails area.

The yard now looks very much used and not well tended for, I applied ontop of the ballast a layer of Yard Filth textured paint I got from Green Scenes at Stafford, then before it was dry random patches of different dirt and soil scatters, from woodland scenics, javis, and my trusty ground up tea bag contents.

As I have a double slip which is within the yard and no signal box due to it being a yard I have opted to use the Wills SS91 point lever and ground frame kit for the cosmetic levers for the points, the double slip has the 2 lever frame and painted up appropriately. I will be installing cosmetic rodding to the other end of the slip as well.

For the single point on the other side I didnt want to use a double lever frame again so I decided to make my own for a single lever.
Using H beam plastitrust I had sitting round, I removed the extra bits from 1 side with a craft knife, the lever is from the same wills kit just cut down.

Both have been sunk down into the sub base which is made from foamboard and will be weathered in once the cosmetic point rodding is installed.

At the weekend I went to my local model shop and picked up these 2 items, some evergreen rectangular tubing which will be scratch built into some industrial extractor type ducting, and the noch leaves, they were a find and a half because they are normally way more than that online.

Not updated this in a few weeks but I have no been idle.
With taking a week off work to use up my remaining holidays I have had since last saturday to dig well into the micro layout.
I will post up the pictures and just give a rundown afterwards as I have done so much.

A mate of mine gave me his old stock boxes so now I dont have to keep everything inside the manufactuers packaging which takes forever to take stuff out of and also can damage the stock and packaging.

I have installed a load of lighting, with a custom made lighting rig inside the depot shed, and 2 exterior lights on a separate circuit, there is also a welding light at the back of the depot shed for added effects.

Over the last few days I have been adding lots of little details into this end of the layout, the static grasses are both by peco, 2mm dead, and 6mm autumn.
The tree was made using seafoam and noch autumn foliage, I wanted to model an autumnal scene rather than summer or spring, just because I love the look of the trees and leaves at that time.
The skip I got last weekend at the Preston show, from Ten Commandments, the barrels are from skytrex, I bashed them up using my track pin hammer and painted them black, there are others which I have painted blue which are not bashed and are sitting by the depot shed. Which this evening has been stuck down.

I am trying to convey a depot in the late 80s early 90s when it was really down on its luck, used but not well cared for due to lack of funding and give a damn about the railways in that era.

I'd say you've hit it spot on, although I wasn't alive at the time so I'm hardly an expert.

The ground cover and small detritus certainly make it feel worn down, although I'm not sure how that skip got there; I don't think you'd be able to drive the truck over all that pointwork! The track plan seems to make it more open, despite the space, and as always the night lighting adds another dimension.

Overall, some fantastic work.

Thank you, I did think about how the skip got there, I'm just going with it was dumped somewhere else and the PW gang just took it with them, haha If not, then i'll have to install some barrow type crossings.

It has been a long while since I did an update.
This layout has now effectively been completed.
Since the last update I have built a few dioramas, a 2ft micro on a shoestring budget, and just finishing up a 4ft micro atm.

Here are some pictures of Oakford Lane taken last weekend when we had a bit of good weather and I was able to take her outside.

The 37 pictured was a comission loco done for me by laura McWilliams and is 37 686 in its construction sector livery guise with all the bells and whistles, I am so made up with the loco.

I hope you have enjoyed this build, I certainly did.

I would like to update some of the layout in the future with techniques and tools I have learnt since then.
Maybe I will, lots of other plans before that though.

The "junk" is very believable.
