Millfield street

Hello! Kev here, finally got the time and space to start a layout. Lucky enough to have a 16x12 shed which i have board out and made the baseboards. So my layout i am planning to make over the years is going to be called millfield street. It will have 4 mainlines goods area and engine sheds for interest. It will be set in a fictional place somewhere in the midlands early BR era ( means i can run pretty much any steam loco) but in the end its a model railway so i can run anything really! Lol

it will be dcc but will try keep stuff very simple.as i suck at electrics.
I have taken inspiration from  my favourite model railway layout as a kid in worthington east at gresley model railway club in derbyshire with a double bridge and through station.
Also inspiration off little blythm and everard junction with the way they have laid the track so its always a good view and not to over complicated track plan. I find alot of people try cram in to much track work etc and that to me makes it look like a train set, in my opinion but hey everyone is different, life would be boring if we was all the same!

So ive laid the track and wired the points and buswire for the 4 main loops and storage yard. Not amazing but im learning all the time, youtube is a life saver

first 4 locos for the layout have all had dcc chips fitted. The hall class was a pain for me .the rolling stock you can see so far is from my younger days except for one mk1 which you can tell the quality difference to the old mainline ones .so cant wait to start building up the fleet when i have the cash!

i will do a track plan at some  point but i havent decided on the goods/engine shed area yet

Hi Kev

What a great start and may I say a very neat and tidy job you’re  doing.

not even a screw driver in sight.

Im liking the viaducts, looks like there’s going to be plenty of scenic area too.

i will be following this one for sure

That's a really good sized space and you've made a great start. May I suggest two things before you go much further. First, you could use cardboard sheets to make a curved backscene in each corner which I think improves the situation. Secondly, I recommend I.D. Backscenes - they are photographic ones of several different types and look really good. You can see them on my layout thread, but they are temporarily on the ceiling while I change the layout. My next post on that thread will probably show them moved into position.

Cheers dan, yeah i always use to just do everything straight when i was younger, but looking at some of the larger layouts and when people photograph steam specials it seems to look good on a gentle curve :)

that was my next thought rob once im happy the track/electrics are running right, a good backscene would help set it off a treat i think :)

Little bit of a update. Started to lay the track for the sidings, waiting on a couple more points to be delivered so i can finish them off. I got a adm turntable to fit also so hopefully that will all be done by next weekend :) and also got a few new coaches.

Ok so all the track work is done and wired up! Points all work fine and fitted the adm turntable, which i have to say i am very very happy with!:) i was stressing a little bit about installing it and setting it up but it was a piece of cake to install and the set up took about 5mins. 10/10 for me! So now im just going to leave things how they are for awhile and make sure there is no problems and im 100% happy with the track work before i start scenic stuff and boxing in all the electrics/making a control panel

So i started ballasting this week and boxing in the electrics. I am not great at the ballasting but for some strange reason i quite enjoy doing it lol i sprayed the track with sleeper grime first then mixed 3 ballast types together which gave me a mix i liked, so will see how it goes. I have done the side with no points to start with haha :)

So i got another loco to add to the collection, Hornby castle with tts sound. Thought id see if i like the whole sound chip stuff and it was a great price for a great model. The Hornby dcc controller needs to go tho, is so slow and unreliable. Also had a go at weathering for the first time and did all my rake of 7planks. Room for improvement but they will do for now haha :) primed the bridges up aswell.

Very impressive progress and I'll second the opinions on the sweeping curves to the bridges. I have done the same thing on a much more modest scale with my own layout, a single line curves before crossing three girder spans ten feet above a river and a single span over a mill leat before curving the opposite way into a small through station. I am at about the same stage as you are with construction. I really ought to get some pictures posted!

I will be following progress here with interest despite our layouts being very different, the build philosophy is much the same, especially about not trying to cram too much in. Less is more, so people keep telling me!

So back to work lasted just over a week then got furloughed again, so back to the model railway! Painted the tunnel mouths and started landscaping. Also ordered the gaugemaster dcc controller. Need to stop ordering stuff online! Haha but then again all my campervan trips have been cancelled this year and got refunds for all the festivals i had planned to go to, so i got to cheer myself up somehow lol

Looking good! I too was thinking about what I have been spending online, but my other half pointed out that we aren't doing anything else. Normally we would be tying our gear onto the old BSA and heading off to festivals, vintage motorcycle rallies and WW2 events, for which this was going to be a big year.

So we have been able to justify buying a few more goodies for our hobbies than usual.
