RMweb Gold Popular Post Revolution Mike Posted January 13, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 13, 2020 Oldshaw was built by Andrew Bartlett. Details and photos of the layout as built and exhibited by Andrew can be found on the EM Gauge 70s website. The layout depicts a small station and nearby factory and sidings on a Western Region branch line in the mid-late 1980s. Oldshaw is built to 4mm/ft scale with EM gauge track (18.2 mm). The scenic section is 8ft by 1ft 6 inches with a total length (including the fiddle yards) of 17ft by 1ft 6 inches). Stock is controlled by DCC (Lenz base station with Multimaus controllers) and sound fitted. Couplings are a combination of accurate screwlink, instanter etc couplings in fixed rakes and spratt & winkle couplings for hands-free uncoupling and shunting. Three of us (Guy, Tom and I) acquired the layout in late 2017 as we were all big fans of the layout and it presented a ready finished layout for the three of us for a location and era that we are all interested in (despite none of us modelling in EM!). For the first year or so we focussed on converting stock to EM and then we decided to make a few changes. As built by Andrew the layout was fiddle yard to scenic board but with the station end there was a blocked off bridge exit that cried out to have a second fiddle yard built to enable through running. In 2019 we built a pair of new fiddle yards in 2019 (followed by a new lighting gantry) to allow the layout to be operated with through running for the first time. Looking towards the station before the second fiddle yard had been built to open up the track under the bridge at the far end: Track plan Oldshaw is built to 4mm/ft scale with EM gauge track (18.2 mm). The scenic section is 8ft by 1ft 6 inches with a total length (including the fiddle yards) of 17ft by 1ft 6 inches).
RMweb Gold Revolution Mike Posted January 13, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 13, 2020 We took Oldshaw out to the Define Modellers day at the weekend just past and despite a fuel injector failure on the way up the layout got there a bit late! Our next outing is the excellent Derby Exhibition run by Mickleover Model Railway Group on 9/10 May 2020 at the Roundhouse opposite Derby station. Cheers Mike

Paul W
Good to see Oldshaw is seeing a new lease of life and also being opened up for through running, something that it has been crying out for for years. I look forward to seeing it at Derby, date penned in my diary (-:

Wayne 37901
Great to see Oldshaw is still going. I expressed an interest in it with Andrew several years ago as he was thinking of selling it, but then I forgot about it as we lost contact. In the end my first venture into EM turned out to be Dave Tailby's Trevanna Dries after purchasing it from another DEMU member. I did however manage to acquire Andrews model of 50014 as it bought by the same person who owned Trevanna. I noticed that some of the bogie stock has S&W couplings, can I ask how they're fitted? rob D2
Love this. Was always one of the “ premier league “ BR blue layouts about. Good to see it maximising it’s potential with the through run
Popular Post lyneux
Here are a few photos from the two socially distanced running days that we held over the summer. There was quite a bit of new stock done for the layout during lock down including a centre 150/2 car for 150144, the 155, 50149, PRAs as well as a couple of PWA fertiliser vans. You might notice a few interlopers from Motts Lane amongst the shots! Guy
Southwich
Hey I recognise a few of those locos! Thanks to Tom H/Guy/Mike for a superb day back in the summer when we were allowed to have a socially distanced running session of Oldshaw - it was nice to see some more modern stock on Oldshaw! A few more photos from the session below: Hopefully it won’t be too long till we can have another play again! Kind regards, Will

As much as I’m biased in liking the more modern stock, the job you’ve done on the 150/155 is stunning! They look right at home on the layout. 156 next? lyneux
Thanks Will. I was thinking 150001 now that I've sourced most of the bits! A 156 would look good though too and I should probably stick my hand in my pocket and get one of Charlie and Arran's. It's interesting to see it in ONE livery! Whatley needs some love at the moment so is the focus for the rest of the year. Guy Edited October 27, 2020 by lyneux

hoffers
Inspirational layout. Always liked it and was invited to have a little go at operating a loco at a show a few years back.

And there's always Rule 1 anyway...... Very nice layout, I recall seeing it in 'Rail Express' (I think) a few years back and at a show a while after. One of those which sticks in the memory......!

However I now live around 180 miles away so.........I hope it all goes well in my absence (again)! PS The wood for the layout I built in the 1980s came from CMA Calne, which I hope is still in business.......
