RexAshton
I want to use magnetic uncoupling on my new N gauge layout. Previously I've used DGs which would always be my first choice but I haven't figured a way of fitting them to NEM pockets. As an alternative, does anyone know if the Dapol magnetics are compatible with MicroTrains ones? The reason I ask is that quite a bit of my stock is not fitted with NEM pockets but most of the locos are. Failing that has anyone a method for fitting the DGs? RMweb Premium Dave Searle Posted January 14, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 14, 2020 (edited) Hi Rex, We've used DGs in NEM sockets on Hinksey Yard. I cut down the mounting plate and solder some wire (I think it's 0.8mm or 0.9mm Nickel Silver rod) so that it will clip into the NEM socket: Hope this helps, Cheers, Dave Edited November 8, 2022 by Dave Searle
RMweb Premium Kris Posted January 14, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 14, 2020 Just as another option, It is possible to retro fit stock with NEM sockets. This would only need to be done for those wagons and coaches that need to be uncoupled.
dpgibbons
Dapol do a NEM conversion kit - see this
Paul80
Their easy shunt's work very well but are not compatable with micro trains. Their own magnets are very expensive as well but there is a much cheaper work around if you go down that route. Paul
RexAshton
Thanks for the info folks. Looks like I'll be sticking with trusty old DGs. Is there a set dimension for the position of the cross wire Dave?
RMweb Premium Dave Searle Posted January 16, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 16, 2020 Hi Rex, It's a while since I did them, and I think I used a variety of settings so that I could choose an appropriate one. I'll have a closer look at the weekend and let you know some measurements. Cheers, Dave
RMweb Premium Dave Searle Posted January 20, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 20, 2020 Hi Rex, I've measured one of the couplings: 0.9mm Nickel Silver rod for the rocker, at least 5mm long Tail of the brass plate reduced to 3mm in width (to fit in the NEM slot) Centre line of the rod between 7-8mm from the front of the coupling. It is probably worth experimenting a bit with the length if you have tight curves. Hope this helps, Cheers, Dave 1
