125_driver
Hi, is there anything other than Howes that do a class 86 sound decoder and if so are they any good? Also how easy would it be to fit such a decoder to a Hornby class 86 (ie not DCC ready). Many thanks
RMweb Gold Dagworth Posted January 14, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 14, 2020 The most difficult part of DCC fitting a Hornby 86 is isolating one of the motor brushes from the motor frame. Other than that it's a very easy job. Andi

Many thanks Legomanbiffo does a class 86. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmeaLA87ano Haven't tried an 86 myself but I have many of Bif's other projects, and they are all good. IMO the safest way to hard wire one into the Hornby 86 would be to use an 8 pin harness and socket (e.g. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DCC-Concepts-DCC-8PF1-1-only-x-8-Pin-NEM652-Wired-Decoder-Sockets-300mm-Wires/173545790940?epid=18010616266&hash=item2868229ddc:g:xjwAAOSwg8taHyRe) and plug the Loksound into that. Red and black wires for track pick ups, orange and grey to the motor. But first make absolutely sure that the pick ups from the track are completely isolated from the inputs to the motor. Best use a meter to check, and plug in a cheap bog standard non sound decoder to test first, just in case. I've only blown one Loksound decoder before and my wallet suffered to the tune of £118. Lesson well and truly learned. Hope that makes sense. Edited January 14, 2020 by cravensdmufan Additional wording
