Ford Sierra in N?

Hello

I am looking for a preferably late model Ford Sierra saloon in 1:148 N scale.  I have tried a search on Shapeways but have found nothing (although it has to be said Shapeway's search function is awful!)

Anyone got any possibilities?  I would consider a continental N scale version if nothing else is available.

Hi John,

Wiking did a 1/160 Sierra XR4 as part of a set of 3 80s cars, but I have not found anything else. Ref. the shapeways search, the key is to use as few words as possible, the more you add the more answers you get... Unfortunately, still no sign of a ford sierra though.

I've just taken a look at Wiking's website and it doesn't look like the Sierra is made anymore, not in 1:160 at any rate.  Time to go searching the second hand market....

The lack of 1980s 1:148 scale vehicles is an anathema.

There is the new 2020 range announcement from ODC due very soon. Might be something suitable but I wouldn't hold my breath. They seem to have massively scaled back on N gauge and the little they have produced is heavily skewed to the 50s and early 60s steamy era.

That's a great list on that website although it is primarily aimed at the American market so the majority are 1:160 N scale rather than British 1:148 N gauge. Here's another old list of vehicles (including military, construction, etc subjects) that includes various N gauge scales including Japanese at 1:150:

The old British cast white metal ranges from the likes of Langley, Fleetline and P&D Marsh may well include a Ford Sierra.

One notable addition is RailNscale who produce 3D printed vehicles (available through Shapeways) and offer many in 1:148 scale.

I agree that we would be very lucky to see any 1980s vehicles in 1/148 scale in next week’s announcements, not for want of direct lobbying by me and others I am sure. Should have bought more Cortinas :-).

Curiously Oxford’s N announcements have been consistently around 30 vehicles per annum since they started in N, and that reduced only marginally in 2019 . The year 2018 saw 31, and 2019 saw 28 new announcements. What they have achieved is a reduction in the backlog of items announced but not yet released. December 2017 - 26,  December 2018  - 23, December 2019 - 15. So as of today, taking account of this week’s delivery of two vehicles,  the outstanding models date from January 2018 - 1 (due to delay in licensing approval by the operator), January 2019 - 1, June 2019 - 6, October 2019 - 5.

2019 was the first year when no tooling in 1/148 was announced, influenced strongly by the uncertain economic and political situation. I am assured that there is a plan for ongoing new tooling in N, some ready to go, and which may well be announced next week.

Escort, Marina, Viva........

I don't think that's the solution, but it would be nice to know what sales of the ODC Cortina have been and in comparison with a similar saloon cars from 10 to 20 years earlier. However, the Cortina Mk3 (1970-76) is probably a little early for the 1980s. The Mk4 (76-79) and Mk5 (79-83)  would be more appropriate.

Here’s one in a set of six. The Sierra came with the two other 1980s cars as a set of three when new. The other three older era cars were another set of three.

Also so there’s a set of similar era cars from p and d marsh but they’re terrible. Particularly the metro and cortina!

That's not a miniMetro, more a maxiMetro! :D

Looking again I think the beetle and the Capri are based on the wiking models as they’re quite accurate. It’s the cortina and metro that are home grown affairs. P and D Marsh make some excellent item so not denigrating them by any means but I think N Gauge cars may not be their strength.

Unfortunately no Sierra in the new year announcement today from ODC for 2020. Apparently it was very disappointing for N gauge with no all new models scheduled and just five reliveries of existing ones.

Well I have put my bid in on the job lot mentioned above, I can always move the others in the lot on if they don't fit in!  Now I want to find a N scale Rover SD1...  Not holding my breath...

Good luck with the bid and the SD1! Maybe you convert a Sierra? Can’t end up any worse than the Metro!

  • 1 month later...

I am unsure where its from but I have a 1:148 Sierra Sapphire (Dad owned a F reg one)

It was brought as unpainted metal, so that may narrow it down a bit, but I cannot as yet remember whom I got it from.

Its out there but clearly not easy to find.

Will update when I remember...

I was the only bidder so somewhere in the postal system is a box of cars....

Assume they arrived ok. Just picking this thread up again. The other cars in the lot are (1) an E30 BMW 3 series so very much suitable for an 80s layout as they were made from 1983 onwards and we’re commonplace  (2) a E class Mercedes from circa 1986 onwards (one for the doctor or barrister of the town) and less everyday but certainly not scarce.

The out of period ones are a huge Opel Diplomat from the late 1960s (also a contemporary matchbox toy subject at the time in about 1/64) used mainly by the wealthy and I suspect actual diplomats! Others were a BMW 500 series saloon of the 1930s and a very regal looking rolls Royce. If the three oddball ones that one would actually be useful to model the ubiquitous wedding scene in your church!
