Another spare hour this evening and I’ve started to draw up a potential 3D print for an Asda delivery van. I want a couple of these in the supermarket car park that will be on the front right side, and as Oxford don’t do one, a bit of CAD and I’ve come up with this so far.

Hi David,

I feel a bit late to this party but it’s great to see you back.

You’ve come up with another fascinating concept.  The van is impressive - did you dismiss the idea of converting one of the Oxford Diecast vans?

cheers

Ben A.

Hi Ben,

I thought about using an Oxford vehicle but the closest is the ice cream van and it’s got too much that would need chopping about. The print will be  a much cleaner construction. I’m hoping to get the decals and glazing on later in the week.

In other news, I’ve started a bit of light weathering on a portakabin kit. Each layout I like to learn something new, and this one is all going to be about weathering. I don’t like too heavy weathering on a layout, especially in N as the real world when viewed from a distance actually looks pretty clean. Getting the balance right will be a quest on this project.

After a very stressful morning at work I spent the afternoon working on the layout. Modelmaking is proving to be an excellent pastime for mental health at the moment!

I sprayed the track to weather it down, and while it’s not the most even spray it looks better than left as laid.

With that out of the way I started construction of one of the over bridges and couldn’t resist starting a little scenic work too.

A little more scenic work on this corner now. After this is all hoovered up, I need to start on the roadway, which I haven’t decided how to do yet. Normally I print road plates with road markings on, but given the curve I’m thinking I may spray this and attempt to line it by hand. It’s mostly hidden so it doesn’t need much detail really.

Today’s project - a building has appeared! I hadn’t intended on using any of the Scalescenes buildings as I prefer to design and make my own using their brick/concrete sheets, but the modern industrial building happened to be exactly the right size for where I wanted an industrial unit anyway, so I’ve made good use of it.

I’ve started doing a bit of detail work around the portakabin this week, waiting for some fencing to arrive before I can finish this area off.

Additionally, I’ve started roughing out the scenic area inside the tracks, the main feature of which will be a 1980s brick office building with overhanging roof. A quick test for sizing for now as it’ll be a while before I get round to making it.

Thanks Nigel,

Got a bit further with the building this evening, starting to feel more urban now. This is just a fun light bit of modelling really, but been very welcome to have a project to work on during the lockdown. One day I’ll build a proper layout again when I have time, space, and money.

I have to say that I am loving this layout. I have a similar circular layout under construction in HO (whereas my preferred scale is N like that David has employed here), but I am amazed at the quality and speed with which you have been able to construct this layout.

One question David - Where have you sourced your cars from? I am struggling to find sufficiently diverse range of modern vehicles (for my N scale layout)?
