thought i would post up some pics of the ruston i just build for a friend from a judith edge kit

all in all went together very well only tricky bit was the jack shaft and the bend on the roof

paint all done by me  as were the transfers  on my alps printer

That's quite some flywheel - it must run on pretty well?

yes slow running is excellent i can get it to take a whole 1 minute to travel 4mm and also it will coast over an unpowered peco slip about 10 inches

Just came across this topic, I'm on the verge of retiring and looking for a shunter for a layout. To cut a long story short, I was an apprentice with Babcock & Wilcox in Renfrew back in the mid-1970 and the works had siding all over the place and you always knew that shunting was going on by the noise of the wheels having an argument with the tight curves around the place. Moving forward 45 years I was looking at the Bo'ness & Kinneil railway website and notice that they were using an ex B&W 0-4-0 shunter of the 165DS type. So, before I go and buy this kit, does anyone know what the main differences are between the BR and industrial shunters? The B&W shunter does not have a jack shaft, the exhaust is also directly in front of the cab, not at the front of the bonnet?

The ones without a jackshaft are diesel electrics - classed as 165DE. You can produce of of these from the kit (I did this a few years back) - basically just fill the hole for the jackshaft (which is still present on a real 165DE, as the frames were identical). The kit is pretty similar to the Boness one, if Google has found me photos of the right loco.

 

The two BR ones were basically off the shelf 165DS shunters - the details differences between different locos are down to the design evolving over time (the shape of the cab changes at some point), and being offered with all sorts of different options (4 or 6 wheels, electric, diesel or hydraulic transmissions, inset steps for the shunter, and so on).

Don't fill in the hole for the jackshaft - all RH frames were the same no matter what the drive was. To be accurate the hole should be opened out to what would have been where the gearbox bolted in and a blanking plate fitted on the inside. Photo of the 6 wheel version of the 165DE (PWM650) show this. 

The kit includes an etch with alternative coupling rod arrangements, a plain rod for the DE and a connecting rod for the DMs driven on the leading axle.

I'd forgotten that detail about the jackshaft blanking plate (although I managed to get it vaguely right on the model)

If I had known about it earlier (the 165 0-4-0 was our first kit) I would have included it but it only came to light when we measured PWM650 at Ludborough some years later.

Having had a bit more time to research the 165 DE, aside from the Bo'ness shunter there are certainly quite a few more preserved and a fair bit of information going back in RMweb to lean on, the search engine had its moments and came up with subjects that had nothing to do with what I was looking for, but eventually got there. So I decided to have a go at the DE and ordered the kit last Thursday lunchtime and it arrived first thing Friday from Judith Edge, excellent service Michael.
