Given the square drop on these you could probably lower the front bufferbeam to the correct height, if you haven't done that already (being an alteration of the 1966 'Albert Hall' model it has the typical Tri-ang raised height). That should make it easier to model the round fronts of the piston valve covers.

Those early Churchward engines were quite strikingly stark for the Edwardian period.

My 1980S Hornby Railways-style LNER Streamlined B17/5 is finally taking shape once again and it is coming along nicely. I will be posting pics soon and keep everyone to do with the model.

 

My 1960s Tri-ang Hornby-style George the Ffith is also doing okay pretty much, too; it just needsdetailing and also the right authentic packaging for it same with my other models.

The retro-style models are back! I have recently purchased a 3D-printed GER S56 0-6-0T body in GER livery No. 87 after the preserved example still with us today! It should be on its way here and once it arrives, I will share photos of it off my phone and share with you the progress of it. The body takes the old Dapol/Hornby Terrier chassis so it gives it the old-style look of models much like the SECR O1, the LNER B17, the LNWR George the Fifth and the LSWR S15 Class.

 

As Christmas is fast-approaching, I have plans for my 1000th post and I happen to have something in mind which you'll all like as it is mainly to do with Hornby's Centenary Year (or whatever's left of it).

Here's my take on the B17/5, done a while back when i was given a damaged Mallard body. Different livery on each side 'cos i can only see one side at a time! I used the Patriot chassis since i already had a couple in the spares box.

How much fettling did you have to do to get that body to fit . Also that looks an awful lot like an A3 tender body on a Black 5 tender chassis.

Nearly! B17 chassis and shortened A3/4 tender. Damage was confined to the running boards so cut through on the 3rd boiler band and cut again to get the right length to fit the chassis! Then plenty of P38 on the wet thumb........not perfect but captures the look. (you can tell i'm not a rivet counter)

Catching up with this tread, 

if you change you mind about tender drive and want to convert it to loco drive, I did this to my st Patrick which I also made as a straight framed loco years ago by reinstalling a five pole mw1001 and triang gearing back in the holes left over from when. The chassis was used as the hall chassis with a X04 in it, this way I was able to cut down the huge coal mound in the tender to something a bit more normal looking, food for thought if you run out of things to do!

Well I suppose I am ! 

This i I can only state this for St Patrick (it must de near twenty year old model now) as I have, it had the slot for the gears and the slope cut for a XO4 including a tapped hole for the rear screw, and it looks just like a hall chassis, Haveing checked I used a hall pickup sprung wire and plate on the bottom,

 now awaiting the mines different from yours messages !

Yes I have a St Patrick. But it is boxed away so I cannot check. But what you have said does not surprise me. The Hall chassis seems to have been at one point used on the Hall, B12, Sir Dinadan and the early Black 5. And now it looks like the Saint as well.

Later 5MTs had a tweaked version of the same casting, I think, with the rear body fixing screw going vertically rather than horizontally. Certainly, when I built 44743 I had to do a bit of thinking and improvisation to get the body to stay on the chassis at the cab end...

It's been months since I last posted anything here! So, here's my trip to the Severn Valley Railway which is currently paying host (at the time of writing this post) to the Saint replica:

The one thing I am making a model of even if by means altering an old Hornby model, but hey - it's in keeping with the look of it, right?

Now, I know these old models aren't nowhere near as highly-detailed or perfect runners as the latest ones, but those things still have such charm in them, right? I actually had a model of Saint Catherine on my layout as I child but that made soon became a non-runner and it would be years before I eventally got a Hornby Saint model only to make it into a model version of the replica from Didcot.

 

I have to say she's coming along nicely but looking for the right transfers, nameplates and numberplates will be a different matter; once I do obtain the right nameplates and numberplates, the model will soon look the part...almost, but then again, it's only a model so what do you expect?

LNWR, Sorry for taking so long to show this here, But here is my version I finally finished of the black S15 as 746 Pendragon. I made 2 tenders for this engine. Both 6 and 8 wheeled.

My Prince George model is coming along nicely, now. I decided to bash my Hornby 2P with parts of the GEM kit together.

At least the chassis runs well. The parts have not been stuck on, this is just a mock-up and the cab from the 2P will be removed and the one from the kit will be grafted on along with the other parts. At least I'm on the right track (so to speak).

Well, it's been a while now, but I have been making progress on my LNWR Prince George model so far:

As you can see, the parts have been grafted on and it's becoming more and more closer to the original class but true to how models were produced at the time. Already, I'm excited for how this model is gonna turn out (nicely, I hope)! As soon as I get ahold of Hornby's LNWR coaches, they'll go nicely together.

 

More on this as it develops. And look how it's grown so far!

L.N.E.R. K4. (Hornby B17 body and tender frames, Triang 2MT chassis, scratchbuilt tender body. A retro-style model that Hornby could have pulled out of their parts bin around the mid 80's.........

Hi 33C,

Did you have to shorten the B17 body at all to get it to fit. The running plate seems to fit the wheels so well.

And as an addition to my S15 Pendragon shown earlier in this thread here is another one. Just love the older engines. So much you can do with them. The tender is not the original short one that comes with the Triang/Hornby Sir Dinadan but a Schools class one that I modified to suite. It is about 1cm longer.

Yes, if you look at the firebox you will see where I cut 'n' shut half of it out. Your "Schools" tender compliments the loco well! (Have you got a white background for photos as black loco's are hard to see.) Your right about older loco models. Before China got involved, any parts from the late 50's to the 90's would interchange, like my K4.

Wow, nice! A very nice 80s style model! I must say you did very well with it!

 

In fact, I'm doing a 1980s Hornby Railways-style model which is the LNER B17/5 4-6-0 using a Golden Arrow kit and giving it the 1980s Hornby treatment like with my 1990s Hornby Railways SECR O1 model also done with a Golden Arrow kit and real Hornby parts to compliment it! Check that out as well!

Yes the white background is for the black engines. In fact I tend to use a white background for most pictures.

Another retro K4 with Hornby ivatt mogul chassis and GBL body. Moulded handrails give it the margate feel
