Guest Jack Benson
Hi, Amongst the Guardian's 'Europe's most scenic rail journies' is Paris-Palermo. Click here for the article. Has anyone taken the effort to complete the journey and if so. Was it worth it and is the go-to website still seat61.com? Our only experience of the area was on maritime patrol and the shoreline looked very inviting. Cheers
RMweb Gold Nick C Posted January 23, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 23, 2020 I've not done that route, but it looks good! I'd certainly recommend seat61.com, I've found a few useful tips through there, like Brussels -> Prague for about £25.
RMweb Premium brushman47544 Posted January 24, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 24, 2020 (edited) One change of train in Milan...can’t go wrong! The train does the Levanto - La Spezia route too. ICN1563. Palermo section renumbered from Messina. Edit: now read the article which says Rome - Palermo not from Paris. Still worth doing. R.Langley
Back in 2018 SWMBO and myself did Reading to Palermo on the train over the course of two weeks, which included Rome to Palermo in one day towards the end of the trip. 100% worth doing, though no catering so, as per seat61.com, take a picnic, relax and enjoy the lovely scenery go by. The train ferry from Villa San Giovanni to Messina is an added bonus too.
stivesnick
I did the later part of the journey (Naples to Sicily) as part of a Ffestiniog Travel escorted trip many years ago. It was an interesting journey. The company web-site has this trip as one of their un-escorted, we can arrange whatever you want trips. Would be interesting to hear how their prices compare with an arrange it yourself trip. Nick
ianmianmianm
You could tag on a ferry from Pozzallo and finish in Malta for a triumphant ending. It's only about 90mins on the catamaran and it delivers you a very short ride from Valletta.

Nick Hi, The cheapest option is fly from the UK to Rome and take the train, then fly back from Palermo but it is not the only option. Ironically, we found that the journey to London from our home to be the most expensive portion (and the shortest, crowded etc.) of the multi-stage journey, this included the use of our veteran’s discount. hayfield
We have been to Italy 3 times by train from St Pancras, the trips always have stops overnight, going twice staying at Chambery and once Turin which makes a very long day. Coming back stopping twice at Mulhouse once at Turin ( again a very long day). One trip included a trip on the Bernina Express, another included a trip along the Italian Riviera, the Cinque Terre. The stretch between Lyon/Chambery/Turin is very picturesque, as is the Milan to Mulhouse The Red Arrow service between Venice and Turin is superb as is the cross country fast line from Mulhouse to Gare de Lyon Certainly the trip from Paris to Sicily looks very interesting, especially if done in stages to enjoy the scenery
