Please don't rely on an RMweb topic as being a reliable guide to what is happening or what you should be doing on such an important issue as Coronavirus; consult government resources or seek medical advice through the appropriate channel if you are in doubt.

TV advertising seems strange these last few days. Advertisers must have pre booked and paid for slots so adverts are still appearing even though you can't do anything.....

Some examples....

Relentless commercial radio adverts for the new Vauxhall Corsa ....... you shouldn’t or can’t get to a dealership....plus car sales will be dead for months and months.

Local radio adverts for investing in a stocks & shares ISA .......when the markets are in flight and the economic future is totally uncertain.

Local radio adverts for a travel agency and tour company ..........???

National adverts for McDonalds .....when they are closed.

There may be a danger for some of these firms if and when things become really dire. Having cheery chirping voices announcing a company or brand name may annoy many people and cause some lasting damage to that brands image.

You'll have a job with courses closed in the UK and borders closed in Europe.

All I need now is the girl from Trivago.....:D

Good luck with that one, love.....

If she's at a loose end, she's welcome round at mine and we can self-isolate together....

A rather better way to go than the virus.:jester:

My brother-in-law living in Spain, was stopped by the police yesterday, on his way back from a quick trip to the local Mercadona supermarket.

They wanted to see the contents of his shopping and see the till receipts to check the date and time and to correlate it with the items in his shopping bags.

They are clamping down tightly on people disobeying the rules on staying at home.

I just saw a reference to the tightening up of lock-down in Lombardy.

You are not allowed to travel more than 200 metres from your home, and they have been using mobile phone data to check.

Thats OK than cos Spar is more than that from me, but the phone stays home anyway.

It does look as though you are stretching the definition of exercise to suit yourself and are not fully behind the spirit

The detailed, written guidance does say “minimum time” for all outside things, including exercise.

Very restrictive, because anyone even half fit needs to get puffing and sweating for a fair while to get any real benefit from it.

An hour of really going for it? Is that reasonable?

You will probably find if they get stopped and cannot produce their mobile phone they will get fined regardless......not so easy.

Most people have one, but not everyone.

I think we have more than enough police, but they are grossly inefficient. As to Spain, I get the impression that they haven't fully recovered from being a police state

What happens with MOTs? Are you allowed to  go out for a test

Halfords auto centres are open but shops aren't so they will change you an absolute fortune if your car fails on a bulb

We are contemplating the weekly shop and the implications in the current situation. I don't see how social distancing is going to work in a supermarket, the concept is a good one, but there are all sorts of valid reasons why it isn't going to work. Time, perhaps, to do the shop online

Garages still open for MoTs and repairs (perhaps they won't do cosmetic repairs though, I don't know). I've heard that some garages are arranging collection services but that's off their own initiative rather than something they're being asked to do.

To be honest most people check all their lights/indicators/brake bulbs before they take it to mot...it's one of the mot items a complete novice mechanic can fix for themselves.

Also, garages re mot stations are on the list to stay open afaik.

Used to be the case. Not any more. Some cars are so poorly designed that changing a light bulb can be very difficult indeed.

hmmm, well, having been out of the trade for a few years I cannot dispute that...I do remember some manufacturers made it tiresome to change a bulb..like some continental models.

I am using the "pay at pump" option and wiping my hands with anti-bacterial wipes after touching the nozzle and keypad.

You do realise that anti-bacterials don't work on viruses, don't you?  Unless of course it is alcohol based - and most I've seen aren't.

Indeed, a wire fell off my Mrs car after a deer ran into the side of it, to push the connector back on required a major dismantle of the front end, the local garage did it for £20 (fortunately) but such is the nature of modern cars it's not so easy to repair even trivial faults.

Give me a Ford Capri, 'Tina or Mk1 / II Escort and back in my car tinkering days I could fix anything - armed only with a screw driver and half inch spanner for a significant amount of the jobs.

They took TUC biscuits off the menu a couple of years ago, I still whinge every time I go :D

Gave last Friday and was reassured by the nurse that giving blood is essential travel (although my local place is conveniently a 15 min walk across the park from my house so two birds: one stone.)  Thanks to the enhanced management of the queue of donors I was in and out in 35 mins!  However, they *still* had mint Club biscuits and custard creams - result.  The only place I eat these now.

At my first donation session when I worked in London about umpty-umph years ago, they offered me a can of Guinness afterwards...

The problem then is the car could be contaminated by the guys working on/testing it, where do you wait while they test it (if it's not collected) and you could contaminate them if they don't clean it first - and taking your car for an MOT (for those of us not in reserved occupations) is not seen as a need to go out.

Sainsbury's seem to be able to do an online order for Thursday delivery down in S E Kent.

The issue of MOTs has been raised on other forums and on the radio phone-ins.

I would have thought this is along way down the list of government priorities at the moment and just one of a myriad of issues that will raised or affected by this crisis.

I expect if the police stop anyone and find an MOT has expired, they will take a pragmatic approach, based on the date of expiry.
