Imminent to me means almost immediately, not a few weeks hence.

A set of 6 information boards have appeared this week in New St. Station:

Looks like they are at last giving the public some up to date information

(Sorry about the first one, I didn't realise how fuzzy it was going to be, the light level was a bit low.

It's probably akin to the Cornish "dreckly", which means anytime within in the next century or so.

I passed the M42 HS2 bridge works the other day.

Site preparation is well advanced and they expect the bridge to be installed and completed by the end of this year.

Total closure of the M42 penned in for the weekend of Aug 8th & 9th. That'll be fun !

Presumably that's when the huge spans are due to be lifted into place?

It seems the BBC has now seen what is supposed to be the "final" draft of the as yet unreleased report.

The Beeb are saying that it says there is no "spade ready" alternative to HS2 to relieve the congestion on the southern end of the WCML and as such recommends it goes ahead.

It was saying it would be good for the economy by bringing the North, Midlands & South closer together.

Note this hasn't yet been given No.10's seal of approval, it's just the result of the enquiry.

It was aso interesting that the BBC news report started with"Building HS2 will bring increased capacity" first, then mentioned faster journey times in the preface to the item on the report.

They were still bandying around various costs such as it has so far increased from £56bn to £88bn and is likely to cost well over £100bn.

Not that quickly!!!  Dreckly often tends to be more an equivalent of 'maybe' rather than an expression of the time you'll spend waiting.  It looks like HS2 might well be moving away from that at long last.  And I wonder how much the delay has cost?

Interesting reports (via Sky and his Twitter) as well that Andy Burnham, obviously sensing a sell-out for the north, is requesting that the Northern Powerhouse (East - west) section takes priority, with the main part of HS2 following later.

John.

Sounds more like Party Political point scoring !

Yes, and ridiculous considering that construction work on the southern section of HS2 is proceeding.

There isn’t even a route or a plan yet for the trans Pennine HS3, or whatever it’s going to be called, never mind an actual project underway or even any act of Parliament to enable it to be built.

How can that possible be prioritised over phase 1 of HS2 which is actually underway.

I agree, it’s nothing but a mixture of political point scoring and pig ignorance.

Agreed, but that is Andy Burnhams job; to press for the best deal he can get for the area he represents. Or at least sound like he is on the case. just the same as those MPs in more southerly constituencies who are calling for HS2 to be scrapped because it will not benefit their voters.

Here is a more detailed report on what Burnham said, which is considerably more logical than some of you have been making out. He is emphasising that, given there are a limited number of designers/engineers, that if Johnson is putting a delay on Phase 2B, then those same people should instead be used to work up HS3.

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/feb/09/prioritise-northern-powerhouse-rail-says-andy-burnham

According to Transport for the North, the aim is to have Single Preferred Options for each section of the routes that make up HS3/NP Rail by the end of 2020.

And slightly disappointing if it is, since Burnham is about the only senior person left in that party with visible signs of competence.

Here's his actual statement.

https://www.greatermanchester-ca.gov.uk/news/prioritise-building-northern-powerhouse-rail-npr-to-deliver-modern-rail-in-the-north-before-hs2/

He's saying that control of Phase 2b should pass to TfN who would integrate and prioritise those parts that link the North and finish off the north-south links later.  There is also the possibility of a shorter tunnel in Manchester leading to an underground station at Piccadilly, presumably entering from the west so trains towards Leeds can continue without reversing.  I don't see any suggestion that he wants Phase 1 and 2a to be delayed further.
