A big feature of the layout is the river that runs through the middle & almost from one end of the layout to the other. I was a little bit worried about how well it would turn out. I haven't attempted to build a large section of river on a layout before, on my Porthkerry layout there are only small streams & a waterfall.

I wanted this one to look as if it is a fairly fast flowing river. The base is made up of various stones & gravel, I then used Woodland scenics water. Once dried I've used a bit of matt white paint around some of the stones/rocks in the river
Here are a few photos of the results so far...

I have noticed the water has gone a bit milky in places, I have read it sometimes reacts with the PVA glue used to stick down the base gravel & rocks & the cloudyness disappears over time , so hopefully that will happen here soon.

Cheers, Stu

  • RMweb Gold

There were parts of theMountain Ash system where you couldn’t see the railheads; traffic just followed the grooves in the muck made by the flanges.  It wasn’t broke, so they didn’t fix it...

Your river looks pretty good to me.  A thing to include might be the washery drain, with the water running black downstream of it.

Hi all, again, thank you for the kind comments.
Time for another little update, I've been constructing some more security fencing & adding some gates.

Added a water pipe across the river & some more random odds & ends at the old stone bridge area of the river

I've been back at scratch building some more buildings for the layout.
Small hut made from card & brick papers

Next up I've been scratch building a single road engine shed to go in the fan sidings. Again made from card & brick papers, Etch brass window frames & some plastic 'H' section for the girders. I've done some inside detail using bits from Scalescenes downloads I had & done some weathering on the insides. Also put some LED lighting in there, lamp shades made from bits of old Airfix kits I found in the scrap box.

I've made a roller shutter door for this one I can open & close

I've been constructing a couple of Scalecenes buildings for the layout, one a small office/shed for the road vehicle weighbridge. The other also a Scalescenes building, a signal box which fortunately is in the same style as the colliery buildings I have built & is similar in design to the prototype rail weighbridge building that was at Maerdy Colliery so is ideal as a weighbridge building.

I've also built a Ratio oil tank kit, modified it a bit so I could fit 2 tanks onto one base so it takes up less space, this will go alongside the Engine Shed.

Hi Stu,

There are some carefully noted details that you have included that greatly adds to the scene, they have been well modelled, this is turning into a delightful model full of colliery atmosphere. It is a pity more RMwebers are not following your progress.

I've now done a good bit more of the static grass on the layout. Surprising the difference its starting to make I think

Your pannier is a suitable repaint into 7754, which worked at several collieries including Maerdy and Hafodyrynys already mentioned, as well as Abersychan and Mountain Ash.    It carried a mid green NCB livery with red coupling rods.  9600,  an 8750 with the Collett cab, worked at Merthyr Vale, retaining BR livery and overhead wire warning flashes.

7754 never worked at Hafodyrnys or Maerdy, It was at Elliott Colliery that it worked,  prior to going to Aberyschan. Hafodyrnys had the older pannier tanks 2XXX series, including one or two on hire. The Maerdy Panner tank was 96XX class although they had others on hire from Radyr, one of the NCB drivers who had worked at Radyr told me this.

Hi Stu,

As I noted previously you have recreated the colliery scene with great atmosphere. There are some great little features. Have you ran locos and stock on the layout yet? I can see several dog leg joints on the track, while I understand this adds to the run down and chaotic look of colliery yard, I worry that models might not run over the track well which could lead to operational frustration.

Hi, Thank you,

I've had a Dapol Pannier, Farish class 04 & a Class 37 also with some 16T minerals running over all the tracks to test for any problems & all seem to run fine. I did have a couple of derailments at first but that was due to the wheel flanges catching on some of the infill between the rails which I had to deepen a bit & now they are ok.

That's good news Stu, I'm delighted for you. I just mentioned it as in the past on previous N  layouts I found it an issue , more so when pushing wagons and shunting and that aappears to be the main operation of your lovely looking layout.

Cheers

Duncan
