Hi Will,

Not sure how I missed this one but looks (and sounds!) like a fantastic project.

I'm following now so will keep up to date.

Best regards and stay safe,

Jeremy

Thanks very much Jeremy - very kind! I’m trying to do as much sound fitted stock as I can, as and when budget allows. Thanks for the follow - I hear you’re venturing into P4? Have you got a layout thread up yet?

Thanks very much - you too!

Kind regards,

Will

Just a quick update from this weekend’s progress. All of the droppers have been soldered onto the extension, which I’m hoping to have wired in over this week. I’ve also had a trip to B&Q to get some plain wallpaper which has been glued to the backscene on the extension board. A quick shot of 37698 on the extension:

I’m not certain about the backscene as there are a few areas which have slight creases in it, so I may end up adding an additional layer of wallpaper.

Also on the list of things to do this week is to fit 37698 with some EM wheels that arrived on Friday.

Thanks again for the continued interest in the layout!

Kind regards,

Will

Following a productive morning on 37218, sand back and first round of priming, I’ve managed to get a good few hours on the warehouse for the back corner of the layout that I’ve had waiting to go since the start of the year. A quick pic of 218 following the coat of primer (more on my workbench thread):

First off I glued the laser cut structure together (thanks to @DaveClass47 from Dean Park for running me off an additional kit) with some deluxe speed bond making a nice rigid structure. Following the glue going off I cut the South East Finecast brick to the correct height and glued that onto the face of the building. Between the brick and corrugated section there’s usually a strip of metal, which I have recreated with plasticard strip. I used liquid poly to glue it to the plasticard below, with lolly sticks being used to hold it in place and flush:

I’ve now ran out of corrugated sheet, so will order some more to finish off the left hand side and the roof section. Pretty pleased with how this is looking, albeit a load of details still need adding! A few shots of it below with 37698:

Hopefully some more progress will be made this week.

Hope everyone is staying safe and well!

Kind regards,

Will

Have you tried double sided tape for Plasticard sheet? works well just be accurate by placing lightly until you are happy then finally rub down - works well.

Also your warehouse reminds me of the plaster cast Ten Commandment Low Relief buildings - ready to place after spraying up but less handling as they are easily chipped.

Hi Will,

Coming along really nicely. It’s frustrating when you run out of materials half way through a project. I’ve just ordered a load of plasticard in various formats.

Ballasting looks nice. Will you be weathering it or going for the “freshly down” look?

Keep up the good work!

 Best regards and stay safe,

Thanks for the suggestion Ian - an interesting idea. Would there not be a gap where the tap isn’t if that makes sense? In my head I’m not sure it would sit flush with the structure if that makes sense although happy to be proven wrong! I used the deluxe speed bond which goes off after 5 minutes so don’t have to wait long for the plasticard to be glued to the laser cut structure!

Thanks Jeremy. Annoying indeed but I only bought one sheet so I’ve only got myself to blame! I’m assuming that’s for your new P4 project? Looking forward to seeing that if so!

Yep it’ll be weathered down, going to follow @RBE techniques for the buff ballast. My plan is to get the extension trackwork done and sprayed over the winter then next spring I can weather it all in one hit (that’s the plan at least!).

Thanks for your kind words and continued interest.

Kind regards,

Will

Evening all,

I had the majority of the bits arrive for my station building yesterday, which I duly assembled. Jason Johnson who designed and cut the building had done an amazing job based on the plans for Takeley. I think it gives the layout a nice Eastern Region feel! A few more bits need adding, including the other roofs, drainpipes and a canopy then it’ll be on to painting.

I’ve also made some progress on the platforms, which are an LCUT creative kit, with peco platform edging topped with plasticard and Scale Model scenery platform coping.

A few shots of the work from this weekend:

Also a few video clips from this evenings running session:

Hopefully some more progress on the station over the next few weeks. I’ve also had a set of Penbits sprung bogies arrive for one of my Bachmann 37s - looking forward to starting on them this week.

Hope everyone is staying safe during these challenging times!

Station building is looking excellent. If I ever build something GER I'll be very tempted with it.

Thanks Will that’s very kind. The £1.99 I spent on the plan was definitely worth it! Is GER on the cards then?! ;)

Not sure what will take preference the 37 bogies or the station...

If I ever do anything GER it'll be with kettles but that one is a long way off with plenty to keep me occupied at the moment ;)

Well both 37 bogies or the station building have me interested!

  • 1 month later...

Just wanted to say a big thanks to everyone who has followed and supported the thread over the past year - it really is appreciated. I’ve really enjoyed the challenge of EM over the past year; I’ve learnt a hell of a lot with regards to finescale modelling and pushing myself to strive for better results every time I take on a new project.

With regards to Motts Lane I haven’t done a whole lot on the layout, however I have plans to push on with the layout over the Christmas break. Most of my time has been spent on 37114, which now is fitted with its PenBits sprung bogies, which I must say are awesome! A pic below from today’s detailing, including detailing the sideframes and the fuel tanks:

Hope you all have a great and safe Christmas/New Year! Hopefully we can get back to some exhibitions in 2021.

Kind regards,

Will

What brand/ size of ballast have you used in the yard? - the blue/ grey.

Thanks.

Hi Damien - the ballast is C&L fine ash ballast. Think it may have been Carrs’ but believe C&L took over the range?

Hope that helps,

Will

Evening all,

Managed to get a good weekend's work in on the layout, getting the right hand board to a stage which I’m really happy with.

Following the basic steps set out by Luke Towan I’ve built up the scenery around the bridge.

I started off by using a spare Capri sun box and newspaper to create the basic shape:

46A0E785-47D2-4D90-A54F-BD8F3B6A1B0F.jpeg.db5930ac21f757ba1fc62dd366655638.jpeg

Before using paper mache to cover the cardboard templates to create the basic shape of the scenery:

This was the stage the layout was at last night with the bridge in place to hold the scenery whilst it dried and 114 posed on the layout:

The layout first thing this morning having dried:

Following a trip to the Range for the plaster cloth, I covered the entire layout to ensure there was no more flat board:

Following the setting of the cloth I painted the layout burnt umber:

Which was left to dry until it was tacky. Before it fully dried I’ve applied the basic dirt cover using grout from B&Q:

Finally this evening, 37698 emerges from the bridge at Motts Lane:

Really pleased with the progress this weekend, it’s nice to have one board with no more baseboard showing! I need to get the double slip wired then I can get the track sprayed and ballasted when the weather improves.

Kind regards,

Will

Hi Will,

Nice progress on the scenic stuff. Scenery has never been something I'm great at, but with Trevanna Dries being due for some attention and a new layout in progress it's something I'll have to work on.

Luke Towan has some great videos, as do some other American modellers. One I follow is called Daniel, his channel is dansrailroad2011. I'm not sure how old he is or how long he's been a modeller but some of his weathering work is really good.

Cheers,

Wayne

I too have missed this one (my 5" gauge is taking up too much time). The layout is coming along very nicely, as a long time EM modeller I am always looking to support new ones. Have you joined the EM virtual group on Facebook? Keep up the good work.

Thanks very much for the kind words Wayne. Agreed I’ve never been that fond of scenery, but really enjoyed last weekend's work so hopefully will get the rest of the layout up to that standard over this weekend now I somewhat know what I’m doing! Thanks for the suggestion - I’ll check him out!

Thanks Kipford much appreciated! Certainly been inspired by Brighton East - an awesome layout to see at shows! I am indeed on the EM group although don’t contribute that much. Once the layout is a bit further on I’ll post some photos!

Sorry if I’ve missed this but haven’t seen it but what legomann 37 sound have you got in your loadhaul 37

Thanks Craig. It’s the 37/0 chip with a double iPhone speaker in it. This chip will end up in 37114 and then I’ll get a 37/4 chip for 698. I don’t think anyone does a specific 37/5 chip so I think that’s the closest possible. In the VITrains model you could quite easily get a bigger speaker without any modification

A quick update from Motts Lane this evening. Managed to get a few hours on the fiddle yard this evening, to a point where I can now run trains in and out. This was duly tested by 37698 as can be found below:

My plan is now to get the backscenes glued onto the other two boards tomorrow evening, and then get the other two boards sorted with a basic layer of ground cover similar to the right hand board.

Thanks for everyone’s continued interest on Motts Lane!

Kind regards,

Will

More progress at Motts Lane. Got the layout fully setup this evening following the completion of the remaining ground cover. Really pleased with how things are looking now following the ground cover on the other two boards and a coat of paint on the fascia. I’ve also cut an additional piece of fascia to match the relief of the landscape on the right hand board using the jigsaw. Need to get the control panel working this morning then it’s time to play trains!
