Evening all,

Been busy track building today and finished the first of three turnouts on board one. This is a 1 in 10 turnout which I think will flow beautifully. The next will be the single slip followed by another 1 in 10. The reason I'm doing this is because I'm not totally happy with the Peco offerings but the reason I abandoned scratch built track in the first place was that the continental stock tends to run along the sleeprs with code 40 rail......but enter the "code 40 and a bit" rail!!!!!

So, with the rail height issue in mind, I decided to experiment by adding a strip of 1.17mm wide x 0.25mm thick metal to the bottom of the code 40 rail before soldering it to the copper clad sleepers....and hey presto...the problem is no more!

I've also made it compatible with Peco code 55 flexi track (I'm not sticking bits of metal to nearly 25 meters of straight track!!), so the height of the new code 40 and a bit rail is the same as code 55. I've raised the turnout sleepers as the Peco ones are quite thick so height we, it all matches in. And lets be honest, no one is ever going to analyse the track work that closely after the OHLE wires are all in place! :D

So here is the first turnout, just needs a clean up with the fibre glass pen and the tie bar fitted and I'll move onto the slip. I've also used a mixture of plastic sleepers as I'm starting to run out of the copper clad ones until I re-order some more.

Also, I've semi-finescaled it using Cav Millwards (he did Burton on Trent on this forum) N2 track work dimensions, although I've gone for 0.82mm flangeways, but still it looks much more prototypical.

Another project I've been working on in the background is the post depot, based on the one at Thun. Here is the first floor posed in position on some wagon boxes to get the height with a rake of wagons unloading alongside. I've received another batch of plastics this weekend so I'll be able to crack on with the ground floor over the course of this week.

Good evening,

Been working quite a bit on the templot plan for the layout. I think it will make things easier for track laying as I am now hand building all the turnouts. Still got the depot area to finish off but its coming along nicely so far.

Good evening,

While I'm still slowly beavering away on the trackwork, I've got several side projects going on. One of these is the super detailing of the front ends of my RABe Eurocity set. I've been wanting to paint the "nose" ends red (which I think they all were in the early 1990's till withdrawal) for sometime now and add the pipes, just to give, what is already a nicely detailed model (and one of my favourite items of rolling stock!), a real edge.

So I've made a start tonight by gently and carefully sanding the "noses" down just to take the gloss effect off ready for painting. Humbrol satin 132 was used which is the closest match to SBB red.

A couple of before and after shots. I think it's already looking quite good...

Here is a close up of the pipes I hope to re-create. They will be pretty small on the model!

Morning all,

Decided to crack on with fashioning the pipes. I've used 0.33mm nickel silver wire bent to shape. I also used a bit of plastic tube to bend the pipes so they looked more realistic rather than angular. A bit of soldering was requires for the pipe that sticks out from under the nose.

First driving car completed and ready for the paint shop! Quite pleased so far and really starting to add to the overall appearance.

Just the other driving car to do now.

Best regards,

Jeremy

Very nicely done.

It does make a difference.

I recently removed the front coupler, coupler box, and front skirt on a Roco ÖBB 1014 and replaced it with the included skirt sans coupler slot. It allowed me to install all of the detail parts that came with the model and looks much better.

Morning all,

Been a while since I posted on this thread so thought I would update with a couple of ongoing projects that I am slowly doing.

First up, I have now painted the pipes on one of the driving cars of my Grey Mouse and here is a picture below showing the results which I think have really added to this already fine model. Just the other end to do now and then I'll get on to some subtle weathering to bring the whole model to life.

Next up, I have been adding some more to the post depot. Its such a large building and its taking some time to scratch build. I have now completed all the supports on the ground floor and next up with be to add the window framework, doors and also the platform to the trackside of the building.

Here is the depot at Thun which is what I am trying to achieve and below this, a photo of the model so far..

This is the trackside side angle and front, and then where I am at so far with the model...

Still loads to do. The model is over two feet in width!

Best regards and stay safe,

Jeremy

The depot building looks great.

Cheers mate. I'm getting through a fair amount of plastics on it! I was thinking yesterday about how I will go about painting and I will probably airbrush the burgandy/red on and then hand paint the rest. For the red, I may use BR maroon (seems to be a close-ish match) but any other suggestions welcome!

Cheers. I was thinking of one of those primers from Halfords. I wonder if they have a suitable colour..???

Best regards,

Jeremy

Halfords do a red primer for plastic:

Funnily enough, I've just sprayed a bunch of rails and sleepers with it tonight! I've used it as a base colour for BR bauxite on plastic kits before and they seem to come out well.

Cheers Ian. I’ll try and pick some up next time I’m near my local store and stash it away until I’m ready to prime.

Evening all,

Last strip of windows on the workbench tonight. These will be added to the rear of the post depot building and will complete the first floor window strips.

There are four individual panels to be cut out and fitted in between each window upright. Takes forever but will be worth it for the overall look.

That’s looking really good, all three projects show you have a lot of skill and patience. The masts have that Swiss look to them and you’ve got plenty of height, too.

I always like watching your trains lean into that gentle curve.

Hi Jeremy,

The layouts already taking shape. Both the OHLE and the building look brilliant. Great to see a bit of swiss stock running as well.

All the best,

Dave

Thanks Dave. I'm going to concentrate on one board at a time scenic wise.

Cheers Keith. I started the post depot building back in June and there is still loads to do. I've had lots of issues with the "lean" on the curves as the track seems to lay uneven and I've had to make adjustments. Will keep trying to get it right though.

Best regards and stay safe,

Jeremy
