NMRA NATIONAL CONVENTION BIRMINGHAM 2022

It is with a heavy heart that we advise that we can no longer run the NMRA National Convention in Birmingham UK in 2022.

Birmingham City bid successfully to host the Commonwealth Games (similar in scope to the Olympics but for British Commonwealth nations only) in the Summer of 2022 after Durban, South Africa withdrew as host city. This occurred sometime after our own bid to host the NMRA National Convention was successful. As a consequence of that we moved our dates back two weeks to accommodate.  Now, as a consequence of the Olympic Games being postponed one year into 2021 due to COVID-19, and the World Athletics Games in Eugene Oregon being postponed one year to the early Summer of 2022, along with the European Athletics Championships in Germany, the Commonwealth Games are now beginning to hold venues and accommodation across the beginning of our convention week. It is possible that the Commonwealth Games dates might change officially. This of itself will put a strain on booking accommodation and meeting rooms. and will likely impact the prices to be charged.

Furthermore, our train show location, which is scheduled to play host to a number of indoor sports during the Commonwealth Games, has now confirmed that they cannot guarantee that the venue will be back in a useable condition following the Games, in time for the Convention to run at all in the summer. The National Convention needs to be in the Summer for a number of reasons ranging from availability of accommodation in a city location, to traffic conditions and heritage railways timetables which are geared to the holiday periods. There is also the added concern that travel, particularly international air travel, and hotel availability might not have returned to its pre-COVID-19 levels putting extra strain on our planning.

We apologise to all those who we know were either looking forward to participating as exhibitors or convention attendees and who were planning trips to the UK around the Convention.

Birmingham 2022 Convention Committee

Kathy Millatt
Convention Chair

Please note that this doesn’t affect the annual NMRA British Region Convention.

Regards,

Chris.

Sorry to hear that.

Would you be willing to share the name of the venue so that I can update the 2021 Wakefield RMS Exhibition entry on the CMRA website diary?

As an Association we are trying in these uncertain times to keep abreast of Associates' exhibitions whether they be cancelled or still scheduled to go ahead.

The school are not currently accepting external bookings or allowing anybody but staff and pupils on site so we were unable to start preparations for the new venue. Given this and the uncertainties about how the coronavirus pandemic will progress, we felt it was unrealistic to commit to an exhibition and took the difficult decision to cancel.

I have just noticed that The Festival of British Railway Modelling scheduled for the 13th/14th February 2021 in Doncaster has been cancelled/postponed.

The World of Railways website is now promoting the 2022 event, scheduled for the 12th/13th February.

Also The London Festival of Railway Modelling due to be held at Alexandra Palace on the 20th/21st March 2021 is now showing as TBC.

It definitely won't be on the original date but may take place after the summer.

Reading the headlines today about festivals not being able to get insurance due to COVID, I was wondering what the current situation is for shows. Given DEMU Showcase is going to be cancelled again this year we haven’t had the need to take out insurance yet.

Thanks,

Guy

Previous discussions with Magnet indicate it will still be possible to take out policies with the usual terms of coverage but this has never included virus/authority driven cancellations and still will not do. Details of those terms in the policy are in the invitation only exhibitions managers group on here - https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/forum/351-topics/

Mid Essex MRC has for the second year running postponed their Annual Model Railway Exhibition, due to take place in September.

The Venue Owners have requested that any organisation seeking to undertake a Hire had to comply with certain requirements.  Fully understandable given the normal Monday to Friday use, and them seeking to ensure that they discharge fully their Duty of Care to Staff and their own user community.

So as with many a Club we hope to welcome back Modellers old and new back to our Exhibition in September 2022.

It’s now been confirmed that the Hornby Magazine Great Electric Train Show is going ahead.

Please also note it’s been moved a weekend earlier than originally planned due to the football fixtures.

The new date is 2nd / 3rd October.

I heard this morning, that Colchester MRC have now Cancelled their 2021 Exhibition - which was due to take place on 31st October.

So Exhibitions will be few and far between in Essex for the remainder of this year, with Theydon Bois still on the cards at the moment.
