RMweb Premium Compound2632 Posted March 11, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 11, 2020 (edited) A question has arisen on the LNWR Facebook group concerning the identification of a grounded body in a photo on Paul Bartlett's Zenfolio site. The caption identifies this as a M&GN brake van body but those with eyes attuned to things North Western immediately and unhesitatingly recognise it as a LNWR D17A goods brake van, of which about 560 were built between 1908 and 1917 [C. Northedge, ed. LNWR Wagons Vol. 3 (Wild Swan, 2018) pp. 147-152]. Confusion may have arisen because the M&GN had some ballast brakes that were somewhat similar in outline but differed in details, most prominently lacking the diagonal bracing [P. Tatlow, LNER Wagons Vol. 2 (Wild Swan, 2007) p. 197]. In 1935/6, the LMS transferred some ex-LNWR and ex-Midland carriages to the M&GN; the LNER transferred some ex-NER carriages at the same time. However, Digby makes no mention of any goods stock transfers [N.J.L. Digby, A Guide to the Midland &Great Northern Joint Railway (Ian Allan, 1993)]. The native M&GN goods stock had been divided between the LMS and LNER in 1928 but goods brakes and service wagons remained M&GN property. So: were any ex-LNWR brake vans transferred to the M&GN by the LMS? if not, how did this body end up at this location? where is Beardshall Crossing? does @hmrspaul have any further information? Wickham Green
What is it about LNWR brakes ? ............ some time back - not on RMWeb - a question was raised about a similar body, somewhere in Wigtownshire, with comments that it wasn't recognised as of Scottish origin - but speculation that it might have come from across the North Channel.
