Really not sure about your question.  Are you asking about current operations. or back in history ?

Brakevans are no longer used and haven't been for a number of years.

Can you try and explain the era you are talking about please ?

You are in luck !!

There was a scrap metal merchant at Bilston on the former GWR main line from Birmingham Snow Hill to Wolverhampton Low level. By this time there was just a single line running from Wednesbury to Bilston with a set of trailing points into the siding. The trip loco from Wednesbury which was mostly a class 08  was used to haul the empty wagons to Bilston then propel them into the premises of Norton Persto. The loads were collected, shunted back onto the "main line" then the loco propelled it's train back to Wednesbury.

On occasions the siding was served by a class 20, and because guards weren't allowed in the cab of a single cabbed loco a brakevan was provided.

Andy Williams is a local railway photographer / historian and took this rather nice shot in 1988 which is on his website.

Hope this helps as I think it ticks all your boxes.
