Postponement of shows to later in the year could result in many clubs losing lots of money rather than raising some money if it ends up with many shows on the same weekends.

To be honest that really applies to shows near each other or clashing with major shows, non of which have moved dates. Moving dates is ok as long as they are considering others in adjoining counties.

There's plenty of scope for clubs to co-ordinate their activities and try and ensure there's no duplication.

Alternatively, where a number of shows are being held within a locality, staging them on the same day and offering a joint ticketing arrangement might encourage visitors to cover more than one show in a day. It would perhaps open up a wider audience from further afield who might otherwise not consider travelling any distance for just the one, relatively small event..

Hi,

I think it was difficult to space out exhibitions during the last few years. The latest UK MPs briefing mentioned that at some stage restrictions on the public will be experimentally relaxed to see if their understanding of the epidemic holds true. So it may be a long time before it is sure that shows can go ahead. Those shows that invite top layouts can take three years to organise.

It looks as though the UK government persuading the insurance companies to payout for events cancelled due to government advice may have come a few days late for the Basingstoke show which went ahead and if it had not would have lost all of the ~£10,000 cost. Losses have not been finalised yet.

Regards

Plenty of scope - very, very difficult to do. With hundred of clubs, you need some sort of clearing house if co-ordination is the plan. Even then, you'd have some grumpy mob doing their own thing because they had been told that a particular weekend was taken.

If you want a joint event, a bigger venue is better than several small ones as punters won't like travelling between them, possibly some distance and difficult to navigate. It also solves arguments as to who gets the share of the income is big trader A is in one club's hall but everyone part of the event thinks they should get a share.

The Chiltern Model Railway Association (CMRA) acts as a clearing house of the type mentioned for its members. One of its functions is to do just that.

Please allow clubs to follow whatever decision making and notification processes they have to go through before they are ready to make public announcements. We don't need 'any news' posts putting pressure on people to deal with individual enquiries - I had a belly full of it over the weekend with respect to Ally Pally, dealing with some people who felt they should be told before everything else was sorted out.

Very sorry you've got a belly full.

Luton MRC are regrettably announcing that their bi-ennial multigauge exhibition on 18th April at Stopsley School is cancelled due to the current health risk situation.

At present, the roving ‘7mm only’ show for April 2021 is still planned to go ahead.

Folks

A request that may help guide the thinking of those of us who have exhibitions later in the year (Fareham RailEx is in early October)

Would any of the organisers of a show that's been cancelled be prepared to share their experience - particularly with respect to dealing with any cancellation insurance?

Realising that this will likely be something Clubs may regard as "sensitive", we are happy to discuss this via PM.

As a starter for 10, Fareham already have around £3k worth of hotel rooms booked for the 2nd and 3rd of October, we have a separate cancellation insurance policy but at this stage only a verbal contract with our venue.  Knowing how the insurers treat claimants could be quite useful...

Stay safe!

Hi,

At the PM's COVID19 press conference yesterday it was promulgated that the insurance companies have been persuaded by the government to pay out on event cancellation insurance where government advice resulted in the cancellation (as opposed to government orders or laws). This came too late for the Basingstoke show whose regional club I am a member - we were facing a ~£10,000 loss if we didn't go ahead last weekend.

Hopefully the insurance companies will do in practise what they have agreed to.

Regards

Nick

Worth clarifying this though. My understanding from the government press conference is insurance companies will pay out if there is some ambiguity around the interpretation, or if the policy allows to claim in the event of a government edict (as opposed to the current very strong advice). All this agreement has done remove the legal ambiguity around the advice for the purposes of claim handling.

Many policies (in general) do not cover cancellation due to government restrictions or epidemics/pandemics. The government's discussions with the insurance companies has not altered where there is no cover, and as a consequence these claims (where there is an exclusion) may well not be met.

Event Notice! Hi everyone, thanks to Cregagh Presbyterian Church for hosting their show last weekend! Unfortunately due to circumstances that are escalating we can confirm that Wexford Model Railway Club, North Down Model Railway Society and First Bangor Model Railway Club exhibitions will NOT be going ahead. As we have re-confirmed dates we will post these as they are released.

The NDMRS exhibition dates were Sat 18th and Sun 19th April  2020.

Shame, it's a good little exhibition in an area where they are few and far between :-(

all the best,

FORDINGBRIDGE MODEL RAILWAY EXHIBITION 11th APRIL 2020 now CANCELLED

I received this message from the organiser,

"Following the latest government advice on the need to avoid social gatherings in an effort to restrict the spread of coronavirus, the Rotary Club organisers of the Fordingbridge Model Railway Exhibition have reluctantly decided to cancel the event. This is hugely disappointing to all concerned but necessary to protect our exhibitors, visitors and Rotary staff.

"We would like to thank you for your support and look forward to a time when events such as this can once again go ahead."
