The earliest MR ground signal had no white background, a later pattern had the white area above the red arm, later still it became as shown in the photo with white above and below the red arm hence ruby ball description. 1 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I will have a look through my library to see if/when the rugby balls made an entrance in my local line.
