I believe the reference to rugby ball targets means the later arms and therefor wou;d be those you asked about.

The white painted areas on my signal can be removed with a file to make the earlier pattern signals. The earliest MR ground signal had no white background, a later pattern had the white area above the red arm, later still it became as shown in the photo with white above and below the red arm hence ruby ball description.

Perfect, thank you. I will have a look through my library to see if/when the rugby balls made an entrance in my local line. I think they may have retained straight arms at some locations until the end of semaphores in the 60s.
