Any thoughts on how this will affect publication of the magazines in the short and longer term.?

None of us can claim to predict every potential impact of this but we've had a healthy conference (call) today on how our next few months in BRM will be looking. Whichever way it's an ideal time to consider a digital purchase.

Apart from that message from your forum provider this isn't the topic for that discussion - it's about the retailers!

Kernow will still be offering mail order as per an email that I’ve just received.

In light of this evening's announcement, from the Prime Minister detailing further measures on protecting ourselves and others, both our Camborne and Guildford shops are now temporarily closed.

We will not be operating a click & collect service from either shops but will be operating solely through mail orders. You can place an order on our website www.kernowmodelrailcentre.com and through phone orders on 01209 714099.

We will carry on monitoring the situation and update you with any changes.

The KMRC team thank you again for your support during this time.

Our weathering service will carry on as normal with the exception that any order will have to be posted out rather than any customer collection.

Harburn Hobbies of Edinburgh published this on Facebook a few hours ago:

"To mitigate possible spread of the Coronavirus and to protect the well being of our customers and staff, sadly Harburn Hobbies model shop will be temporarily closing from 4pm today, Monday 23rd March, until further notice.

For the moment our webshop (harburns.co.uk) remains open. Also, we will be operating a restricted phone ordering service for mail orders: Monday 10.30 am to 12.00 noon; Wednesday 10.30 am to 12.00 noon and Friday 10.30 am to 12.00 noon. Our phone number is 0131-556 3233. This is a very fast moving situation so please check our website and Facebook page for further updates.

We very much look forward to the time we can open the shop once again.

In the meantime, please take care.

Very best wishes,

Bob, Gillian and all the team at Harburn Hobbies."

I do hope they and the others can weather the storm.

Model Junction in Bury St Edmunds published this on their Facebook page and website:

"Unfortunately we are taking the tough decision to close the shop from 3pm this afternoon (23.03.20) for the forseeable future while the Covid-19 virus settles down.

We may offer a local delivery service over the next few days but we will have to see what advice is given in today's government update.

We will keep everyone informed here and on our website for when we are due to re open.

Hopefully we make it out the other side."

They are hoping to maintain mail order for as long as that is possible.

From Hattons - " We are making plans for a Government enforced 5-6 week despatch operation shutdown starting 26 March"

That was announced a few hours before Boris made his announcement. Technically model railways aren't essential, and maybe the staff attending work are breaking the rules of they're more all from the same household. Boris could have said all retail functionality had to stop, but he didn't go that far. Maybe he has a trainset in one of the rooms in number 10?

(Sorry, I've just lifted this from our website/facebook)

Following tonights Prime Ministerial address, we are having to close our doors to visiting customers.
Please do not travel unnecessarily. We will not be able to serve you.

We are still maintaining a mail-order capability and will do so for as long as possible.

In order to keep any risk to our employees to a minimum, ALL orders will be shipped via our contracted courier service (DPD).

This means that all orders will be subject to a £4.95 postage fee and we are applying a minimum £10 order value.

Please note that any orders to Highlands, Islands or non-UK addresses will not be posted until the lockdown is over, unless the appropriate courier charges are paid in full.  (edit: We will try our best to keep any additional postage charges as low as possible, but courier charges to non lowland addresses can be very high.   Currently, posting via royal mail requires a visit to the post office.  We will not have capacity to do this until the lockdown rules are relaxed.)

Our phone line will be open Tuesday - Friday 9:30-17:00
(01733) 895989

The line will be closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday, though our website will be available 24/7.

We will aim to process your order as quickly as possible

Plans are in place to provide a virtual showroom, with regularly updated images of our stocks to help with any mail order requests.

Thank you for your support and understanding, and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.

So will they be posted or not? It reads like they will, but it's a bit unclear.

I don't wish to speak for the o/p but yes they will.

But only if you pay the additional charge that DPD make, which has not been stated. It is significant for the Highlands and Islands.

It is this much higher charge that is the issue, I have the same issue (as a user of DPD, who are very good, part of the French Post Office) but am still using Royal Mail, which is much more reasonably priced.

More generally I hope mail order does continue, and am very thankful for all delivery drivers and postmen and postmen, who do a great job.

Just a shame that our government, who are now (quite rightly) so concerned for our welfare, privatised the Post Office, with resultant casualisation of the workforce and traducing of the Post Office network.

At Eileens Emporium we are doing our best to carry on working as normal, within government guidelines, until we are no longer able to do so.

We are a small team so have isolation under some degree of control. Following the lockdown announcement we held a video meeting with all staff and everyone has volunteered to continue to keep the mail order going and are not open to visitors. A lot of administration will be done from home keeping the office restricted to dealing with orders, both in and out. We will have to stop if the postal and courier services stop.

As stated elsewhere we have significantly reduced our threshold for free postage.

While not considered essential, we are very conscious that getting supplies to you can in itself be a great benefit to keep you occupied while at home.

We would like to thank all our customers for their on-going support during these incredibly hard times.

Thank-you to Nile for posting our update above, I'll be putting it on our own thread very shortly.

Although this is primarily a model shop thread, I thought (and I hope it's alright Andy, if not please remove it) that I'd drop in a couple of manufacturers statuses:

  • Dapol - Showroom closed but trade side open and despatching
  • Peco - Closed for minimum of three weeks, this includes the trade and retail side including the factory and despatch.
  • Hornby - warehouse still open and despatching as usual. Office staff working from home.

From Dapol:

The Dapol showroom is now temporarily closed. It will not reopen until such time that the Government deems it safe to do so.

Our online and telesales ordering services remain available at this time.

This should help those shops that remain open for mail order and delivery: We are still unsure what "delivery" actually means, i.e. Can we deliver to local customers, or is it only using a Courier, Royal Mail etc.

Direct lift from Twitter via BBC Web site.

UK cabinet minister Michael Gove has been asked to provide more clarity on the government guidelines announced on Monday night.

Speaking on Radio 4's Today programme, he said:

Chancellor Rishi Sunak will outline more help for self-employed workers later

Deliveries of "non-essential" goods such as toys and clothes can continue

He says people should work from home "wherever possible" but there will be exceptions. For example, he says plumbers may be called out to emergencies but Sports Direct stores "should not be open"

Ministers want to "reduce the rate of infection" and will follow scientific advice on whether or not to change the measures after three weeks

Children under the age of 18 can travel between the homes of separated parents - a point he reiterated on Twitter:
