Well I've been cracking on with this project and had hit a few snags with splasher to boiler clearances for 'finescale' wheel back to backs but have redrawn everything with inset areas for those to fit into and also joined the boiler to the firebox and smokebox, in two parts, and then printed them in the last 18 hours to get as far as this. Still need to get a bit more clearances, so another redraw with an extra 0.5mm of clearances and print should do it. Very pleased with this and it is keeping me fully amused!

To all you railway modellers looking for something a bit different to add statically or running in lock-down, how about a tramway?   No you do not have to have overhead if your location coincides with those systems without them.   After all Blackpool's electric tram system started in the 19th century without wires!   I could not even see streetcars on Rod Stewart's 1940's layout so there is something different for him to do!   Well it is just a thought that has started to catch on in lock-down by the enquiries I am getting on London.

Oh dear.... These electronic thingys never work out as well as one would hope. The new firmware went on okay, then nothing. Couldn't set up any servos, so substituted it with another which also didn't work. fortunately the third one that I tried did work. It looks like I have a couple of boards with corrupted PICs. Anyway, the working one works. Whoopee! Set up the servos, then it comes to frog switching....... The servo mounts that I have will accept microswitches, and indeed I have used them on two boards. I thought I might try using the CAN messages to trigger relays for frog switching, so my son sent loads of stuff from all sorts of places and this includes an 8 relay daughter board. Now I am getting into all sorts of new realms. No instructions and SMD diodes to deal with. Anyway, had a little go at building a 4 relay version which I will need for my next board prior to building the 2 relay version that I will need for the current board. I have now found that the schematic provided doesn't match the board. D'oh. More digging in order to make sure that the hardware is capable of delivering what I want prior to trying to set the software up to Give me what I want.

Is this railway modelling?

Well, onward and upward! Correct stuff has arrived in the post (social distancing and hand washing carried out, of course). New pcbs now mounted onto the fourth baseboard (strangely enough board no 3). A lot more wiring to do, but at least I don't have to crawl underneath the boards.

Added some big bolts and pins to link the sections of the bottom beam together rather than one long piece.

base coat to see what needs attention and I’ve ordered some rivet transfers to put some detail on the long girder sections.

I've been doing a little more creating on the laptop. It's printing now, it just fits in the printer without having to angle it.

A simple US Walthers’ kit I bought just before the lockdown, but is actually getting built now - without waiting months to get started.  The home office is a shared space so layout progress is on hold, but this is a helpful way to relax - I don’t make any claims of great modelling skills, but am happy enough with this.

Now finished: even with basic kits the last few bits take me ages (roof details and signage).   The Bike Shop and Bank (reduced hours) remain open, but the restaurant at the far end has closed and the other shops are shut.  More people would seem odd!

Like the look of the bridge, but is that really the best place to keep your underwear ??!!

It’s ok you just move the bridge a bit to the left and it serves . . .

I hope you don't mind me asking if this BL-2 is a Proto 2000 model, in HO scale.

I don't know if you took any photos - but I can think of at least one person who might be interested in finding out what sort of work was involved.

That's right - about 25 years back, I acquired one of these - slightly reduced because the lights didn't work. At some point in the future, I suspect I could be interested in "sorting it out" - fitting LEDs - perhaps even basic DCC - and possibly painting it in EMD demonstrator livery.

Of course, whether I actually get round to any of this stuff in due course remains to be seen ... .

Forum software posted part of a post, whilst I was still composing my intended post - the second time it's done this to me in the last few hours.

Yes it is a Proto 2000 and here is a photo inside..

The motor does require removal to solder and insulate the metal clip from the chassis.

I use Blutack to hold everything in place and is particularly good at reducing any resonance between the cut down iPhone 4 speaker and the rest of the loco

I’ve been getting some virtual work done on some PB&SSR electrics. Very happy with the look - and I’ve now designed a layout for them to run on

For those who might be interested, please be aware that this is NOT the model on sale in my shop - if you order you will receive a most inferior model! I’m still tweaking these right now, so they aren’t available quite yet

Following on from the digital image I shared previously I now have the physical item in my grubby mits. It needs some cleaning up as the printer has added a lot more support than I would really like. At nearly 200mm high it was pushing the limits of the printer. Now to print some more bits of the bridge.

Whatever the downsides of this Lockdown, along with the good weather allowing a bit of painting I am making some progress with outstanding projects in recent days!!

These two have been 'pending' completion for some time years   ...  my Heljan O Scale Class 31 & 37.

The 37 is 37 270, which according to sources worked the very last BR train to Parkend in the Forest of Dean, in 1976. Photos of it from that day show it displaying 'O0OO' headcodes, as was the norm for a while at the time. I have cheated a bit to let it depict the later '70s - it has dominoes at one end & O0OO at the other. In 1976 it was allocated to Landore, but in Feb '77 was re-allocated to Cardiff Canton; my model has CF Depot stickers. The buffer beam skirts are accurate for the time, but there are other very slight inaccuracies for that loco but they come under the "Can't be @rsed" category.

For the 31s, I always liked the Finsbury Park white stripe treatment of their 31/4s. However not to be outdone, Old Oak Common did 31 415 the same, so on one side this is my treatment, and she's a Western Region machine rather than Eastern   The other side is plain Blue 'under dirt', as 31 415 was years later when allocated to Bescot. Some details are accurate to photos, such as that the steam heat boiler access steps behind the cab are plated over, and the hatch itself, but on 31 415 the gauge was left un-plated for years. Ideally I should've replaced the nose doors with the Pete Harvey 'plain panel' etch, which I have, but - I didn't fancy a full repaint of the nose and never have much luck with painting yellow anyway (Back of the Class, etc). But I do have a photo of 31 402 with white stripes and still with original nose doors. At the time this white stripe finish was done, the 31/4s still had a raised trim piece along the bodyside, which obviously was what got painted!! So the original HJ 31 has been ideal for this livery, which would be a bit more difficult to do on the newer 31/4 version. I've just ignored the buffer beam cowling - it's 'wrong' for the Bescot side of my loco, but okay for the OOC side, which is the one I'll look at the most!! However - the curse of photographing models - afterwards I noticed I still have to refit the windscreen wipers to the 31..!!

Both models are still common or garden 12v DC, motors wired in series, with all lights disconnected. The supplied lights are always far too bright, and from my memories of the 70s, the only time you noticed the lights, dominoes or otherwise, was when the loco was in a tunnel....

Starting to detail the body now with 3D printed parts and handrails etc. Hope to finish the body tomorrow and the tender and then it is just the chassis to finish. I am assembling some dummy inside motion that was on the test tetch so there should be something showing underneath to get the look of the profile nearer to true! Boiler fittings still just placed there.

More tomorrow, Cheers Ian

Something a bit different. A bit like steam punk - or better wood punk.

Laser cut, 538 parts, 10 to 15 hours patience, no glue, 20 rubber rings and a packet of tooth picks.

powered by a rubber motor, forward and reverse gear, many working features like fire door can be opened, coupling between loco and tender can be operated by a lever, opening door, and so on.

The ideal work for a lockdown.

Today, I have been mainly ……. gluing boiler together, fitting a few smaller parts and drawing the cartouche, number and lining which I will print as a transfer in either white or 'gold'. Other projects were on the bench today, we all have loads on the go, don't we?

Cheers Ian.
