Richard, have you considered the Hornby plug-in lighting for their houses/buildings?

I haven't really considered anything yet, except Faller's own lighting kits of which I will need two and probably order from Germany!

The Hornby Skaledale system uses grain of wheat bulbs on rather bulky plugs. I will need to thread the wires of whatever I use through some 2.5mm dia. holes in the vertical duct / cable duct, so maybe I should simply choose the old-fashioned approach and put in some amber GoW bulbs.

I have some offcuts of those LEDs on flexible tape, the ones where you can cut the tape every third lamp. I could use these, but three LEDs per deck might be a bit over the top.

I'm happy to carry on looking. The model is loose on its base, and really I think lighting can go in any when before I fix the model down for the last time.

I struggle a bit with surface-mount components but maybe someone does these with trailing wires already attached?

Richard,

I have some of these in stock, 30x pre-wired surface mount warm white LEDs should be plenty for what you need?

These look ideal - I've placed an order for one string and the driver pcb.

Hi,

I finished these buildings for my new layout Collingwood, whilst isolated on the Bank Holiday Friday:

It is a model of a temporary modern signalling centre and its interlocking building. The main building model (the control centre) is actually a modified Busch Kit for a Farm Workshop / Garage, whilst the smaller building (meant to be an Interlocking Building) is a modified PECO REB Kit. The interior details are a combination of Faller models and 3D Printed components.

Well, the 4 servos on board 3 are all working, all Events set, now for the frog switching starting tomorrow and probably running into Tuesday knowing my technical abilities........

Not so sure about that, having seen these oil refineries for example the are a complete blaze of light at night, none of this dim glow worm stuff of years gone by.

I suppose it depends what era your going for?

I've used language a bit too loosely above. Each level, which you rightly think is a deck, is made of four panels which I've called "decks". Three LEDs per panel is probably over the top, but four or six spread over a whole level should be good. I've got a string of 30 LEDs on order, and maybe I can spread these out behind the girders at the edges.

I'd like it nice and bright for a 2012 setting, but only if the light doesn't spill too much through the gaps in my build :-)

Well it's starting to come together now. At the moment the only bit that is glued together is the arch, all the rest is slotted together using tabs that have been designed in. The track bed has chairs down 80%, doing that a chair at a time is a pig of a job. Once I glue the track bed area together this will reduce the bow in this part. The next task is to design the bits that drop from the arch to the track bed and wok out how to print it!

The coach is a Farish auto coach. It gives an idea of the size of the bridge (but there is a gap of over 900mm between the towers.

EDIT: Immediately I posted this I thought there was something wrong, but early this morning it dawned. Those side frames won't do. Back to the bench!

I seem to have less time with all this going on, where are people getting this extra time?

My wife has been busy working from home with no real reduction in workload so I need to keep out of her way and out of mischief so modelling here I come. It's not been easy but working from home has some upsides such as no commuting time. My working day is also much reduced due to the nature of what I do. I do have to home school my boys but with some very careful planning I have been able to engineer lots of modelling time into this. It has not stopped me going out for my daily exercise, from repainting a room in the house and from doing a lot of gardening.

Well! I'm really envious of what you've all achieved during your lockdown (doffs hat to all). The most I managed to do was to prepare some old Ratio signal kits for lighting with pico-LEDs.

@47137 I wondered if what I got from Amazon might have been useful for your chemical works - £16 for 20 including 20 x 1kOhm resistors:

Really tiny:

..... and they work!

That looks like a really good solution, Philip. Do the leds come pre-wired with the resistors?

Well reduced hours due to distancing restrictions means I’ve been sat on standby for nine days so far, then there’s the socialising out with friends time prob adds another couple of days, oh and no kids to entertain;)

Wow!

For the chemical plant I want most of the lighting will be concealed, tucked up behind the girders below the decks. But surely the ones you have would be useful for all kinds of places where you want a dot of light e.g. a lamp over a notice board. Looks like a  find to me.

Have you a link for those on Amazon please, quite a lot of different types there.....

@Barry Ten @47137 @boxbrownie Hello chaps,

Here's the link to the item - they are also available in different colours too. If I recall, if you type in 0402 LED in the Amazon search box, you will see a range of them. These were actually posted from the UK (from evemodeluk). I saw them originally on Alibaba but the site wouldn't accept my debit card, nor do they do Paypal. I found the exact same ones on Amazon, though slightly more expensive:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08138W1D9/ref=pe_3187911_189395841_TE_dp_1

Evemodel C0402Y 20pcs Pre-soldered micro 0.1mm Copper Wired YELLOW SMD Led 0402

by Evemodel

Price:£13.99

The resistors come separately, so there is a little soldering to be done.

Top tip if you don't already know: The wires are varnished and the coating WILL burn off with a hot iron. The trick, passed on to me via another thread on RMweb, was to well tin the iron and present it to the wire which should be enough to get the solder to flow. I did take the precaution of rubbing the wire gently at least once with a piece of fine emery before heating.

That part is not so simple as the wire is just one strand of multi-strand cable! Nonetheless, they ALL worked.

The anode (+ve) is longer than the cathode so it made ID simple.

Cheers,

Philip

PS: For those who are mad or masochists, the LEDs are available unwired!

PPS: The ones on sale by Kyte's are of a bigger size and from the photo, the wire seems to be insulated and may take more space - if that is critical. The ones I bought were also available with insulated wires - I have some on order, but they may be coming direct from China.

I used to fit strain gauges as part of a job - and I'd like to have a go at wiring some surface mount LEDs - but I think I'll leave fitting / soldering those "sprinkles" in the capable "hands" of the robots that were intended to do this stuff.

Saying that, they look good.

@melmerby They were the ones, but as I said in an earlier post, their site wouldn't accept my debit card nor do they do PayPal. I'd be interested if anyone has had experience in dealing direct with Aliexpress and how they paid.

What I will say, I did order a large number of small items and it may just be that one of the suppliers didn't do debit card and as a result the whole order went titsup.

Cheers,

Philip
