@melmerby Thanks for the heads-up. At the time I made my intended purchases, the PayPal option was greyed out. I shall have a need to revisit as I saw they had some replacement pinpoint coach wheels that didn't seem bad value and some pantographs in metal that might be good for EM1/EM2. I think they were £11 the pair - worth a punt.

Cheers,

Philip

So far I have mainly only bought electronics e.g. Arduino Nano clone £1.48!

Plus some LED strips for coach lighting:

Did you set up an account?

I did that so I just have to sign in select item & buy, then it's on the way.

IIRC their payment system is based in Singapore!

Richard,

I have some of these in stock, 30x pre-wired surface mount warm white LEDs should be plenty for what you need?

Not so sure about that, having seen these oil refineries for example the are a complete blaze of light at night, none of this dim glow worm stuff of years gone by.

I suppose it depends what era your going for?

I spent all yesterday evening threading the LEDs into the model. Each LED is glued to a disc of black styrene (from a hole punch) to stop the light leaking upwards through the deck, and I have only one horizontal leak :dance_mini:

The photos are rough, I needed darkness outside to take them but I was running out of energy and I want to share them.

I’ve been going through a few Locos and rolling stock as a break from the actual layout “laying”........the recent ones I bought from Ellis Clark’s pre owned stock I must say are just like brand new, not even a mark in the boxes, one of them the Heljan Class 47 is a nice model with a faultless mechanism but of course all mine have/will have sound so I had a spare class 47 Zimo chip laying around so decided to fit it, oops.....happens to be a 21MTC and the socket in the Heljan is an eight pin (I didn’t know what it had when I bought it to be honest) and from a long time ago I also had a ESU decoder adapter board 21 to 8 pin....so let’s see if it’s fits.

For a start the adapter board is slightly wider than the 21 pin chip but as luck would have it the Heljan uses a rubber grip system to hold the motor secure, this also happens to be exactly the right width to hold the ESU board as well, so it slipped under the rubber tangs each side and held firm, that was a win......then on to the speaker......I have been collecting laptop speakers for a while now as and when I see suitably shaped ones on eBay (that’s good sport as well to pass a few hours), I had a pair from a Samsung laptop, one of which was a nice circular rubber suspended cone speaker with a nice long thin enclosure, tried in position and fits like a glove, but the bonus is it sounds excellent also, better than a sugar cube or some sugar cube “base speakers” I have.....anyhoo it all fits and works great, the adapter board also has solder pads for extra functions the normal 8 pin doesn’t have so I plan to install cab lighting as well when the nano LED arrive.

And that’s just one Loco.....plenty more to go, in between baby sitting the Grandchildren

@Vecchio They certainly look the size. Though they're described as 0402, they measure 0.5mm x 1.0mm. I had a look at the back of mine through a magnifying glass and the solder pads are miniscule! I think you did well getting 1 in 3 to work:blink:! Having them pre-soldered is probably the easiest way to go.

0402 is an Imperial (American) size description as is most electronic stuff.

0.04" x 0.02"

Equivalent Metric size description is 1005

Ah, now that's become clear - therefore the ones marketed by Kyte's are the next size up - 0603s - approx 1.5mm x 0.75mm, still small though.

I have half-constructed a signal with the LED in place. The wires do disappear (sort of) with painting and once standard viewing distance away (insert your preferred distance) they cannot be seen.

Ignore the pin-head in the pivot - it was only there to hold the arm in place.

Philip

Progress with my dockside themed micro layout has slowed a bit recently as I ran out of steam:D. On with the quayside goods shed now. This has been awkward to design and build due to the space it has to fit in the angle of the tracks, resulting in a trapezoidal plan with a corner lopped off (does that make it pentagonal?), requiring the need to dredge up some long-forgotten maths to calculate the slope of the rear wall to maintain  the correct roof plane. The door openings have been worked around the sliding and roller shutter doors from the Scalescenes low relief warehouse free download.

With both shows for the new layout cancelled this year and next showccurrently booked well over a year away, work has now slowed on Blackmoor but picking out individual tiles with various shades of the same Colour will keep me occupied for a while

However the time at homd has given me the chance to extend the patio and relocate part of the garden railway. Still more paving slabs to lay but at least the railway was only out of action for two days and now working again.

Plus a little out of this world modelling. This Revell kit was being given away free by a street sale so I couldn't resist but its taken quite a bit of filling and sanding to get it this far with more to do before airbrushing

Here are a couple of other signals off the production line. First off, a fixed Distant so no mechanism to do and the second is a very short gantry that is also 'wrong handed'. This should have central pivot arms but none were provided in the old Ratio kit so I've used some 'short' arms for the time being. It was a bit more involved as the dollies had to be cut down the lamp supports relocated and the pivots rebuilt. The signal itself had been adapted so as to be sighted as soon as possible from Ledbury Tunnel. The main post itself is short as it is located on the top of a concrete retaining wall. The mechanism will be interesting! Painting and decorating tomorrow:

Patience! It's still growing:

I've got all I can from the kit instructions so I'm making it up as I go along. I can add some smaller pipes and figures.

If folk can "see" what else might be missing please do say.

Edit: I've ordered up some H&S signage from Sankey Scenics, this should help reduce the bareness.

These LEDs are rather good, and indeed very good value for money!

I ground down the encapsulating resin on the backs of them to make them easier to stick into place and overdid this on one, so I ended up using 29 out of the 30 in the string. Here is the overall effect, in my garden at dusk yesterday:

P1020056.jpg.b03e930f5a5c6afd53f6036e1067422a.jpg

The naked LED on its own bottom left is for a small building. The LEDs are running on 3V from two AA batteries and no series resistor at the moment. I think I've ended up with a nice spread of light but I could experiment with a low-value resistor to calm them all down a bit.

Looks excellent, glad you put one at the top on a post as well, the top level needed lighting.

Just a suggestion on population, if you wanted to liven it up a smidge more than just a few normal workers it could have a repair crew with a vehicle maybe going about a maintenance task on the pipework somewhere, just a thought to make a little cameo.

Of course! Have the little people finishing the build. The plant is incomplete; it's not making noises or smells. So have the 1:87 folk apparently putting pipes into the space where my fingers won't go:

I'm not sure if the guy is pointing at something or gesturing with a karate chop, but I like this. This sort of model is never "finished" so to speak and here I can show this is the case. This model is now "finished"!

Regarding lighting and pico-LEDs, a package arrived yesterday and within it were 20 more tiny LEDs (0402 size). I haven't tested them yet, but these are white and the wires are insulated - we are talking exceedingly fine insulation. The downside is that there are no resistors included. If time permits today, I'll set one up and take a photo so you can see for yourselves.

Cheers,

Philip

Here's the photo of the pico-LED. It IS bright but there's no resistor so I lit it for as short as possible so the magic smoke wouldn't escape. I also completed the construction of the Stop/Shunt bracket signal. It works but disappointingly the pivot doesn't match the arm and hence the light doesn't shine through the spectacle. I may revisit that by filling in the pivot hole and redrilling by 0.5mm to one side - so near but no cigar. I shall have to do the plate with the 'S' too in tracing paper:

Here are some 0603 leds from China. Had to wait a while for them, but they do seem to work.
