Wear Valley Wanderer
Hi, I'm a newcomer to the hobby and so far things have been progressing pretty well. One of the first locos I bought was a Heljan OO gauge Hunslet from Hattons. It was DCC from the factory. I have run it previously and it was as smooth as silk, and absolutely silent. Today I went to run it and when it touched the track it started making a very high pitched electronic sound that was reminiscent of the old dial up internet modems! Needless to say the loco wouldn't run and I removed it from the track. My other locos performed perfectly on the same track, so it looks like a short on the track itself is out of the equation. Out of interest I tried running it on DC and although it ran it was making a very odd grating sound which I didn't like one bit. Due to how long I've had the loco I doubt it's in warranty. Can anyone offer any advice? Kind Regards, Mark
RMweb Gold pheaton Posted April 1, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 1, 2020 (edited) yes there is either an internal short or the decoder has failed... the high pitched squeal is emitted by locomotives "not fitted" with a decoder on dcc track, however I have known Bachmann locos do it when there was a short across the 8pin socket, this eventually burns the decoder out...id suggest popping the top off looking for any shorts and or....from your description though it looks like the decoder might have failed, Edited April 1, 2020 by pheaton
