Wow!  Kind of breaks the rules, doesn't it?  I'm assuming that it is the light weight of OO9 stock that allows this?  I'm guessing that for OO this would not be strong enough?  (Thinks: my chances of cutting a straight edge in foam board much better than sawing one in plywood!)

I've used foam board for 00 micro-layouts before, but I glued it to a wooden frame to increase the strength and offer some protection from bumps. I've heard of people making their board entirely from foamcore (the late Carl Arendt was fond of this).

Another update as things have moved on a bit.

Having finally decided exactly where I wanted the water tower to go I needed to make a base for it to stand on. It's the extended area left of the signal box.

Here it is in place.

Before going any further with the scenery I decided to fix something that had been niggling me for a while. The first support stand for the point rodding was in the wrong place, causing a slight kink.

So I moved it to the right, that's better.

And now to the scenic structure, which is becoming a complicated 3D jigsaw for which there is no picture and I have to make the pieces myself.

I've made up and fitted the outer pieces which define the upper level of the land. All I have to do now is fill in the gap between this existing land.

Progress over the weekend on completing the scenic structure. The first part was some thick card for the concrete retaining wall alongside the path.

Then all the gaps were filled with various bits of foamboard. Lots of odd shapes as most of these were leftovers. The hole to the left is for the water tank.

With all the bits in place.

The first lot of sculptamold is on and is slowly drying, more will be added later. This time I added some paint to the mix, probably not enough though as it's turning lighter as it dries. I wrapped the water tower in cling-film so it can be removed later.

Some progress over the last month. The path down to the station has been paved with limestone dust and fenced with strip-wood.

The water tower has been fixed into its hole in the hill side, a small gap on one side needed filling. It has also acquired a roof made from planked Plastikard. The water supply comes from further up the hill (where the town is), via a pipe which emerges from the hillside just above the tank. This is a trial fit while I worked out where to put the supports.

Wooden supports added the pipe is now painted and fixed in place.

The signal box and station building are being painted. In an effort to get away from cream or white as the main colour I've gone for various shades of brown.

A small update, with something small.

I thought that the water tower needed a drain for water dripping from the bag. I made a cover for this from some Shawplan etched mesh, with 10x20 thou microstrip added around the edge.

Here it is installed. I painted the ground underneath black first before gluing it down and adding gravel around the edge.

The signalbox is the small one made by Wills. This is the first one I've built without modifying the door end, it fitted in better as intended.

For guttering I've used some Evergreen half round rod, the flat side is slightly concave so it actually looks like a gutter. The down pipe is some micro-rod I had, seen here fixed to the end before painting.

Inside I've used 8 levers from a Ratio detailing kit, plus the block instrument on the shelf. Other items of furniture are scratchbuilt. The signalman/porter is an Airfix/Dapol figure.

With the roof on, which is a tight enough fit not to need fixing down.

Only the tops of the levers can be seen through the windows, plus a few other details.

No real progress, lack of time has seen other projects prioritised. I was going to add some lamps but I've misplaced them. The station building has moved on a bit, I'll try and take some new photos at the weekend.
